We've Got The County Covered

Harlem Library summer readers become riders for an afternoon

As part of its sports-themed reading program, the Harlem Library sponsored a bicycle safety workshop at the second meeting of the summer program for kids. Young riders showed up with their bicycles and helmets at Harlem City Hall for a bicycle safety workshop put on by the Blaine County Sheriff's Office. The Harlem Library and the city of Harlem sponsored the safety program.

Earlier, Sheriff Glenn Huestis explained the safety handouts used in the program were from the National Child Safety Council. The Council's mascot, Safetypup, was prominently visible on the handout of the bicycle safety checklist and safety rules. Huestis said the materials were bought with contributions from local businesses and individuals. The handout materials were taught and discussed in a classroom setting, then the riders moved out to the paved driveway of city hall for some riding practice.

Blaine County Under Sheriff Frank Billmayer was joined by Deputy Travis Peck when the program moved from the classroom to the parking area for the practice session. First the riders, individually, rode a chicane set up with traffic cones. That was to get some practice making sharp turns and controlling the bicycle.

Next, the riders practiced what they had learned about crossing streets and watching at alleyways and driveways. All the exercises were to reinforce what the kids had learned about watching for and being aware of motorized vehicles while riding their bikes.

It was a beautiful summer day and the kids were attentive to the task. Library Directory Colleen Brommer said 18-19 kids turned out for the bike safety event-with the kids on the move with their bicycles it was difficult to get an exact count. The summer program meets each Thursday at 1pm. The summer reading programs normally meet at the Harlem Library. There is no charge for the weekly program.
