We've Got The County Covered

What 'Cher Point

I was saddened this week to hear that NFL defensive guru Buddy Ryan died at age 85.

I was trying to think of where I watched him that I enjoyed his antics so much. It was like looking at the Bobby Knight of the football field.

Maybe it was when he was running the defense for Chicago. Chicago Bears chairman George H. McCaskey said, “Buddy Ryan was the architect of the greatest defense our league has seen.”

Buddy Ryan left a legacy of two children who have achieved greatness in the NFL. Son Rex is the head coach of the Buffalo Bills and to the best of my knowledge son Rob is the defensive head of Dallas. When Rex was head coach of the Jets, even though Buddy was very ill with cancer, he traveled to New Jersey to see the Cowboys play the Jets and his sons go at it head to head.

Colorful, genius, great. Those are all words that will define Buddy Ryan. He will be missed.

Still in NFL news the Indianapolis Colts have the highest paid quarterback in the league. Just recently Andrew Luck agreed to a six year extension to his contract for a cool 140 million dollars with around 86 million guaranteed. That is huge even for an NFL quarterback.

So, gentle readers, the question becomes just how many Super Bowls will Luck win in the next six years he gets all that big loot?

That was the question posed to listeners of the Dan Patrick show last week. The most common answer was two Super Bowls he will get to but may not win both. Some said none and some said as many as four as long as he keeps off the injury list.

I think that the Colts have gone a long way to surround Andrew with better people. If he can keep healthy and get solidly into the playoffs this year, he may make it to a couple.

In the where are they now department, most remember that Dave Dickenson is now the head coach of the Calgary Stampeders. Travis Lulay is the B. C. Lions quarterback and began his eighth season last Sunday. Fans will remember Travis Lulay as being a truly great quarterback for the Montana State Bobcats.

Calgary played BC in the first game of this season. BC won 20 to 18 with Lulay on the bench.

If you can get the CFL, watch. You will enjoy our Montana stars!

That’s my story and I am sticking to it. Go Thunderbirds!
