Harlem Center to hold 'Senior Sensations Event'

The Harlem Senior Center will be hosting our first Senior Sensations Event on Wednesday, September 21, 2016. We invite the whole community to join us for speakers, information, brochures, pamphlets and much more. September is a month full of special recognition items that pertain to the elderly. We will be honoring and celebrating several of them, in addition to providing the general public with as much information on certain topics as we are able to at this event. Please come and check out what we have available and join us at the noon meal (suggested price of $5.00 for 60 and over, mandatory price of $6.00 for under age 60). Come and go as you please throughout the day.

First off, the month of September is National Senior Center Month. We definitely have to celebrate that! September 11th is National Grandparents Day. September is also National Preparedness Month (for emergency situations). Falls Prevention Day is September 22nd. National Senior Citizens Day was actually a few weeks ago on August 21st, but it is close enough to September that we’ll celebrate it anyway. September is a critical month in an election year such as this… do you know where the candidates stand on issues such as Social Security, Medical Accessibilities, the rapidly growing aging population, elderly housing and long-term care, to name a few. So, we are throwing all of it together and acknowledging it on one grand day!

We plan to have several tables with informational brochures, pamphlets, etc. available for people to pick up. We have several speakers confirmed already. More presenters are possible, but haven’t confirmed yet. We will have many pictures around showing our seniors in their finest moments, several small give-away items, 50-50 Raffle, light snacks and plenty of socialization with friends and family.

At this time the confirmed speakers/presenters, their topics and their approximate times, include:

• 11:00 – 11:30: Harlem High School Superintendent Shawn Smith, Community Involvement.

• 11:30 – 12:00: Blaine County Health Nurse Jana McPherson-Hauer, will be doing blood pressure checks, pulse checks, etc. and have information on Emergency Preparedness

• 12:00 Noon: Please join us at our Harlem Senior Center regular noon meal… serving Hamburgers and Hot Dogs on the grill, weather permitting (suggested price of $5.00 for 60 and over, mandatory price of $6.00 for under age 60)

• 1:00 – 1:15: Milk River Pharmacist Hilary Richman, Medications and Constipation Issues

• 1:15 – 1:45: Sweet Memorial Nursing Home Administrator Jenni Pula, Nursing Home Procedures and Information

• 1:45 – 2:15: Bank of Harlem President Jeremy Kinyon and Vice President Brian Fox, Financial Scams and Frauds

Other entities that will be having tables with information, brochures and other items include, but not limited to: Harlem Public Library, Remote Book Check-out and books enjoyed by senior citizens. Northern Montana Hospital; Diabetes, Cancer Support and more, Montana Foot Nurse; Foot Care and Treatments, Medicaid Waivers Regional Office; Medicaid Waivers Do’s and Don’ts.

Please come to the Harlem Senior Sensations Event and acknowledge our local seniors.
