Hays/Lodge Pole blasts Fort Benton 36-14

Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds have been very competitive their first two weeks of the season since joining the Northern C division of 8-man football. That competitive than this has kept them in games to the very end but the team had yet to secure a victory.

Friday the Thunderbirds headed to Fort Benton to take on the Longhorns under the lights with hopes securing that first win.

Senior Tyson Shambo connected on two scoring passes and ran for another in leading the Thunderbirds to a 36-14 win for their first victory of the season.

Hays/Lodge Pole scored twice in the opening stanza and converted both two-point attempts to lead 16-0 after twelve minutes of action.

Junior Chance Maine got the Thunderbirds on the scoreboard first with a 3-yard run and Shambo connected with senior tough snow for the two-point conversion.

Senior Frank RunsAbove then hauled in a 55-yard pitch and catch from Shambo for the Thunderbirds second touchdown of the quarter. Shambo connected with name on the conversion attempt and Hays/Lodge Pole was off and running.

The Longhorns responded in the second quarter with two quick scores and a conversion to trim the Thunderbird lead to 16-14 midway through the second quarter.

Shambo then extended delete back 22-14 with a 52-yard run to put the Thunderbirds up eight entering the halftime locker room.

The defense for both teams still in the third quarter holding both offenses out of the end zone.

Hays/Lodge Pole was just beginning to roll and finished the game strong. Senior Jace Shambo collected an 11 yard pass from Tyson Shambo to begin the fourth quarter scoring for the Thunderbirds. Snow hauled in the conversion attempt to push the lead to 30-14 late in the game.

Maine would secure the win with a 13-yard run late to provide the final points of the Thunderbirds first win of the season a 36-14 win.

Head coach Shawn Mount has done a great job this fall having his team ready to play. This Saturday the Thunderbirds will have an opportunity to make it two wins in a row when the Centerville Miners come to town.

The Miners are also 1-2 on the season but momentum has them headed in the wrong direction while Hays/Lodge Pole seems to be getting things figured out.

The contest with the Miners is in Hays with kickoff set for 1:00 p.m.
