We've Got The County Covered
The Chinook Sugarbeeter volleyball team continued its hot start to the season sweeping both matches played last week.
On Tuesday the girls easily dispatch the Malta M-ettes at home in a non-conference match. Chinook won in straight sets by scores of 25-15 25-19 and 25-17.
Friday the team traveled west to Gildford to take on their District 6C-East rivals, the North Star Knights in a big conference contest. The 'Beeters again won in straight sets, this time by scores of 25-10, 25-20 and 25-17.
The girls remain undefeated on the season in match play with a 3-0 record including a 2-0 mark in District 6C-East play.
Against the M-ettes, senior Kelsey Mathon had a big game, setting up the hitters with 18 assists while also collecting five of the teams 22 kills on the night.
Senior Taylor Neibauer was strong behind the serving line picking up three of the teams five Aces and collected two of the 'Beeters four blocks.
Junior Carrie Hofer helped secure the defense by digging up 15 balls in the win.
Against the Knights it was junior Sierra Swank setting up the hitters with 11 assists to lead the team while Mathon powered home eight of the team's 27 kills.
Hofer was strong again in the back row with 17 of the teams 54 digs. Sophomore Kourtney Hanson and Senior Brooke Elliot teamed up to make a formidable wall on the front line with each recording four blocks on the night.
Chinook was again strong behind the serving line as Hanson and mathon each collected a pair in the big win.
"Last week was a positive week for us. I felt the girls did a great job of playing their game despite our opponents' tempo. We also did a great job reading the floor and finding the open spots," stated head coach Mollie Rose.
Rose likes the way her team is growing as a group and individually, "Each player is beginning to understand their role and improve the skills that come with that role. Blockers are improving their quickness at the net. Hitters are working to take quick explosive approaches. Passers are focusing on getting their feet and bodies behind the ball. Setters are striving for consistency and connection. Overall, all my athletes are striving to improve themselves for the benefit of the team."
Senior Brooke Elliot has noticed the gains made by the team, "Since our first game against Fort Benton, we have improved immensely. We were given the chance to show our skills this past weekend in North Star. It was a good win that came about with hard work and dedication. I'm proud of our team and our accomplishments, and I'm very excited to see what the future has in store for us."
Junior setter/outside hitter Sierra Swank has played a major role for the 'Beeters both offensively and defensively, "Over the past couple weeks our team has taken great strides of improvements, which makes us really excited for our future. In practice we continue to work hard and focus on the key points that will help us win the next game."
The Sugarbeeter will play the Pioneers in Big Sandy on Thursday and head to Hays Saturday evening to face the Thunderbirds.
