We've Got The County Covered
The Chinook Assembly of God congregation will be hosting a celebration marking the church’s 80 years of ministry in Chinook. Organized in 1936, the Gospel Chapel ultimately incorporated with the Assemblies of God (AG) and became the Chinook Assembly of God. The celebration is set for Sunday, October 9 and will include a regular worship service followed by a meal and time for remembering. Pastor Josh Seymour, who was installed as the local pastor in late June of this year, said everyone is welcome to all activities.
From Chinook Gospel Chapel to a part of the World-Wide Assemblies of God (AG)
The Assemblies of God, officially called the World Assemblies of God Fellowship, is a group of 140 associated national groupings of churches which make up the world’s largest Pentecostal denomination and the fourth largest international Christian group of denominations. The Assemblies movement had its origins in the Pentecostal revival of the early 1900’s in the U.S. The movement expanded into an international movement and now has churches in 212 countries, 380,000+ ministers and 67.5 million adherents
In a letter of invitation for the anniversary celebration, Pastor Josh noted the original mission was organized in 1936 “to reach a booming community.” Ten years later “the Gospel Chapel was organized and incorporated with the Assemblies of God.” The same year the local congregation officially became the Chinook Assembly of God.
The congregation constructed a church building at 901 Ohio Street in the late 1940’s. That building still stands but has been modified into a residence. In April, 1987, the congregation moved to its current location at the corner of Pennsylvania and Fourth Streets. The brick building once housed the offices for the Milk River Production Credit Association, a financial group that made agricultural loans.
The schedule for the celebration on October 9
The anniversary event is scheduled for Sunday, October 9. Pastor Josh Seymour said there would be a regular worship service to begin the celebration. He said his message would be the final one in a series about the “connection between our church’s history and how we minister in the future.” He added there would also be a ‘musical progression’ with selections representative of the 80 years of the church’s existence. The morning worship will begin at 10:45 am.
After the morning service there will be a meal at the church. Seymour said he’s hoping that many of the former ministers of the church will return to be a part of the celebration. He said, “The ministers will each be given some time to share memories about their tenure in Chinook.” The main course of the meal will be furnished and the pastor is hoping guests will bring either a dessert or a salad.
The missionary endeavor initiated by Jack Edgar in 1936 has had an enduring effect on the community and congregation. Pastor Josh wrote in his letter, “Please accept our invitation to join us in celebrating what God has done over these past 80 years of ministry.” The “Journal” congratulates the Chinook Assembly of God for its 80 years of ministry and wishes them a wonderful day of celebration.
