We've Got The County Covered
It all starts with Luke 6:31, also known as the Golden Rule, “Do to others as you would have them do to you”
One of the greatest things about small communities is the simple fact everybody is willing to lend a helping hand to whomever deserves it. If you need it and deserve it, you’ll get it. The person to help you may not even know you personally. People will help just because they might want help someday in return, others just help because they can and they expect nothing in return.
Few weeks’ back a stranger, to me, stopped and assisted me with my car. I was on my way to work when I came to the end of the gravel road about to hit the pavement when my tire went flat. He stopped and helped change the tire even though he didn’t have to. I’ve seen him every morning riding his bike to the end of the pavement and then back to where he lives. We always seem to meet at a different spot in the road. I always wave just as a little, “good morning” as I drive by. It was something so simple given from somebody but it was a helping hand that was appreciated.
Even growing up in the mountains or in a small community such as ours we get to see first hand just how true and meaningful Luke 6:31 really is. Do not get me wrong, small towns and mountain communities have their downfalls. They argue and fight over things whether they are big or small. Facts get tossed around and sometimes lost and replaced with a lie. However just as easy as it is to spread the bad it’s just as easy to spread the good. Which makes the downfalls also strength.
Out in the mountains you learn how to do things on your own with no help most the time. You might get lucky once and call a neighbor and they can come to help. Either way there may be arguments here and there but that is what makes us human. When it really counts we all can pull together and lend a helping hand to those who need it. A neighbor may have had a fire and lost something. Whether it is hay for their stock or loss of a structure, not only do people show up from around the area to put the fire out they go above and beyond to even donate hay or whatever is needed if they can. Differences get set aside in order to solve the problem at hand. All it takes most the time is a phone call and you will have a helping hand.
Wouldn’t the world be simpler if the world actually believed in Luke 6:31. If you wanted help in the future help somebody now. Maybe somebody they know or even themselves, could be the person to help you. Would you want somebody looking down their nose at you for the way you live or the choices you make daily? My assumption is probably not. Why do it to others then? We are all guilty of this in some way.
