Chinook, Harlem wrestling place two on podium

The Chinook Sugarbeeters were in Havre for the Blue Pony Invitational while the Harlem Wildcats and Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds traveled west to take part in the Badger invitational in Cascade as the 2016-17 wrestling season completed its first weekend of action.

Both tournaments included some top notch talent from all across the state and included schools from all four classifications.

Chinook senior standout Tate Niederegger led the Sugarbeeter squad with a second place finish in the 145 pound division while freshman Kurtis Hamilton made the most of his first high school tournament collecting a fourth place finish in the 152 pound weight class.

The Wildcats were led by senior Reece Hutton at the Badger Invitational.

Harlem's strength is in the heavyweight division and it showed in Cascade. Hutton earned a podium spot with a Wrestling Roundupsecond place finish in the 285 pound division. Junior Curtis Humphreys also had a strong performance for the Wildcats in his first week of action picking up a sixth place finish at 285.

Getting the season underway and seeing the first action is just the first step. Both Wildcats and Sugarbeeters were not at full strength last weekend and will look to have more wrestlers available in the coming weeks.

These first few weeks of the season will provide the coaches and wrestlers to evaluate each effort individually and find out where they are at on the mat.

Having the opportunity to face new opponents is always a benefit especially when its the kind of competition they faced this past weekend.

"They all did a great job, we took five wrestlers and everyone of them scored varsity points," said Sugarbeeter Co-head Coach Perry Miller. "We have a long way to go but were tickled with the start. We'll keep working and we'll get there"

All three squads will be in Chinook this Friday as the Sugarbeeters will host their first mixer of the season. Saturday the teams will head to Glasgow to compete in the Scottie Invitational.

In the coming weeks the teams will have a great opportunity to face more great competition at the premier CMR Holiday Classic wrestling Tournament and Great Falls High junior varsity tournament the weekend of December16-17.
