Doug and JoAnne Mitchell's Golden Wedding Anniversary

A large crowd of well-wishers gathered last weekend at the Chinook Eagles Club to celebrate the fiftieth wedding anniversary of Doug and JoAnne Mitchell. Doug and JoAnne have ranched for many years in the Bear Paws, south of Cleveland. The couple have three sons, three daughters-in-law, 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Son Dennis welcomed family and friends to the celebration. He noted, "Mom and dad were married on December 10, 1966. It was -20 that day! The weather was much like today's." Outside there was a bit of fresh snow and the temperature was hovering around zero when the celebration began on Saturday evening.

Dennis described the marriage of his folks as "uniting south and north Blaine County." Doug Mitchell had told earlier that as a youngster he lived in the south country and JoAnne lived up north. He said, "As part of a 4-H program my folks had an exchange student from India living with us. My job was to drive him around to the various places he would make presentations. I took him to a presentation up north, in the part of the county where JoAnne lived, and that's where and when we met."

After the introductions, the celebration began. Guests were treated to a beef dinner with all the trimmings. Cutting and sharing of the anniversary cake followed dinner and then a band, made up of friends of the couple, played for a dance. It was a wonderful evening and a great tribute to the well- known local couple.

Reaching a 50th wedding anniversary is no minor accomplishment. The U.S. Census Bureau calculates that about 5-6% of married couples reach that plateau. The "Journal" congratulates Doug and JoAnne Mitchell for joining that elite group of married couples.
