Turner girls improve to 4-1, Hays/Lodge Pole bests Chinook

The Turner girls improved to 4-1 on the season following a week that saw them defeat the Dodson Coyotes 45-20 and the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks 37-36 in a thriller Monday night The Tornadoes also dropped a 60-27 contest to the Fort Benton Longhorns.

The Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds picked up their first win over the Chinook Sugarbeeters since 2010 in comeback fashion as they erased a 15 point halftime deficit to earn a 46-41 win over the Sugarbeeters.

Chinook bounced back Saturday in Big Sandy as they took care of the Pioneers 44-18.

Turner began the week with a lopsided win last Tuesday against the Dodson Coyotes.

The Tornadoes methodically took a lead early and built on it throughout the contest.

Senior Ella Billmayer and sophomore Raegan Conlan combine for nine points in the opening stanza as Turner established a early 11-4 advantage.

The two would continue to provide the bulk of the scoring for the Tornadoes. Billmayer drained a pair from long range to help her team to a 24-10 halftime lead.

Billmayer would finish the contest with 20 points while Conlan added eight.

Friday in Chinook, the Sugarbeeters and Thunderbirds played a low scoring first quarter that ended with the home team up 8-6.

Chinook would get things rolling a bit in the second quarter as they extended their advantage to 27-12.

Senior Brooke Elliot scored four in the quarter as did junior Carrie Hofer. Junior Erin Pula’s strong play added to the ‘Beeters effort.

The Thunderbirds played well in the first half, got good looks at the basket and ran their offense, they just couldn’t get anything to fall.

In the third quarter they did, quickly erasing the 15 point deficit on the strength of seven points from sophomore Rayleigh Kirkaldie and a triple each from freshman Mulleeah Stiffarm and senior Kiara Shambo.

Pula’s three points at the end of the third quarter gave Chinook back the lead 30-27 with eight minutes left.

The teams traded possessions and points the first six minutes of the fourth with Chinook holding a 41-39 lead with just under two minutes remaining in the contest.

Sophomore Latasha Kirkaldie scored on a nice move to the basket and Rayleigh Kirkaldie fueled the fire with a long three from the left elbow sparking the Thunderbirds to a 7-0 run to close out the contest securing their first conference win in three seasons a 46-41 victory over the Sugarbeeters.

Stiffarm led the Thunderbirds with 15 points in the win, Rayleigh Kirkaldie added 14 and Latasha Kirkaldie 6.

For Chinook they were paced by Hofer’s 10 points along with Elliots 10.

Saturday in Big Sandy Chinooks defense limited the opportunities for the Pioneers in helping Chinook get back into the win column with a 44-18 win. Junior Sierra Swank led the effort with 11 points while Elliot contributed 10.

The Tornadoes face the Fort Benton Longhorns Saturday falling 60-27. Raegan Conlan led Turner with 9 points.

Monday Turner sneaked out a hard fought 37-36 win over conference rival Chester-Joplin-Inverness to improve to 4-1 on the season.

Billmayer led the Turner effort with 9 points. Senior Rennay Watkins added 7 as did freshman Sarah Billmayer.
