The District 9C has arguably three of the top four teams in the Northern C Division with the defending State Champion Box Elder Bears, Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds and Chinook Sugarbeeters having to battle it out for the top spot, January and February are sure to be filled with some top notch basketball.
The Thunderbirds only loss on the season came at the Native American Classic against the Arlee Warriors. Since then they have been on a roll.
In the week prior to the holiday break the Thunderbirds took down a talented North Star Knight squad 72-52 and ran past the Big Sandy Pioneers 91-46 to improve to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in District 9C play.
Against the Knights the game was never really in question with the Thunderbirds owning a 20-9 advantage after eight minutes and a 37-21 lead entering halftime.
Senior Frank RunsAbove knocked down 8-10 shots from the field including all eight inside the arc and finished with 16 points in guiding the Thunderbirds to the 20 point win.
Junior Chance Main added 15 points including three triple for Hays/Lodge Pole, senior Elijah Blackcrow contributed 13 and senior Tyson Shambo added eight markers while dishing out six assists.
Thursday the Thunderbirds headed to Big Sandy to take on the Pioneers and wrap up the 2016 portion of their schedule.
The Thunderbirds were off and running from the opening tip, employing their vaunted full court press and turning turnovers into easy layups as they blitzed the Pioneers for 35 points in the opening stanza.
Hays/Lodge Pole kept their foot on the gas in the second quarter taking a commanding 58-29 lead into halftime.
Hays/Lodge Pole eased off a bit in the third quarter but still managed to put 17 on the board to lead 75-39 en-route to the 91-46 win.
RunsAbove finished with 18 and sophomore Ryle Foote added 12 in the contest. All twelve Thunderbirds scored in the win.
The 'Beeters hosted the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks last Tuesday opening up a 20-9 advantage early.
Sophomore Cord Schneider scored eight in the quarter while senior Wade Schneider added six. Sophomore Isaac Bell and freshman Hunter Neibauer each connected from long range accounting for Chinooks points.
Bell added eight more in the second and Cord Schneider contributed four. Sophomore Brendan Edwards knocked one down from beyond the arc and scored five in the quarter helping the 'Beeters to a 37-21 halftime lead.
Cord added six more in the third and Edwards connected from long range in the third pushing the advantage to 51-32 with eight minutes left.
Cord Schneider finished with 20 points and Bell added nine in the fourth quarter and 19 in the game as Chinook earned 68-43 win.
In Box Elder the teams took each other best shot and each had the lead late in the contest. The Bears led 31-24 at the half but a strong third quarter gave the 'Beeters a 34-31 lead. In the end the charity strip proved to be the difference with Box Elder securing a 51-46 win.
Bell finished with 15 for Chinook and senior Kyle McMaster added 10.
