Season ends for local basketball teams at District 2B, 9C Tournaments

The District 9C Girls Basketball Tournament held this past weekend at the Havre high school gymnasium mirrored the regular season when looking at the final standings as the No. 1 seeded Box Elder Bears edged that No. 2 seeded Fort Benton Longhorns in the championship.

In the consolation final it was the North Star Knights topping the Chinook Sugarbeeters while the Turner's Tornadoes and Chester-Joplin--Inverness Hawks each won a game at the tournament. The Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds and Big Sandy Pioneers were winless in two starts.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters and Turner Tornadoes split their regular-season meetings with each team winning on its home court.

The rubber match would be played in front of a nice crowd at the Havre high school gymnasium as a second game of the District 9C girls tournament.

The sugarbeeters established an early four-point lead and maintain the advantage for the majority of the game. Chinook led 12-8 entering the second quarter and maintained a 19-12 advantage by intermission.

The third quarter saw a steady Chinook attack extend the lead to eight with eight minutes remaining, 29-21 as senior Brooke Elliot drained a three point bomb at the buzzer.

The 'Beeters extended the lead to double digits midway through the fourth, winning the contest 45-36 to advance to a semifinal match up with the top-seeded Box Elder bears. Junior Carrie Hofer led the 'Beeters with 12 points and seven assists in the win.

The Sugarbeeters matched the Bears effort through the first quarter and part of the second trailing just 22-20 with three minutes left in the first half. From that point on the top-seeded Bears had all the momentum as they ran away with a 76-37 win over the Sugarbeeters.

Turner rebounded Thursday morning against the Big Sandy Pioneers securing a 45-28 win behind junior Rylee Conlan's 16 point effort.

Chinook edged the C-J-I Hawks Friday morning 56-55 to advance to the Consolation final Friday evening against the North Star Knights.

The two teams have battled each other hard in two regular season contests and the game played at the District 9C was very similar in style as the Knights eeked out a 47-43 win.

Senior Brooke Elliot tallied 12 points in victory while sophomore Kourtney Hanson added 11 for the 'Beeters.
