Chinook High school will send five to Girls State/Boys State

American Legion Auxiliary Girls State is a nonpartisan program that teaches young women responsible citizenship and love for God and Country. The Girls State program began in 1937.

High School girls who have completed their Junior year spend an intensive week of study, working together as self-governing citizens at Auxiliary-sponsored Girls State programs in every state (with the exception of Hawaii).

Participants learn how to participate in the functioning of their state's government in preparation for their future roles as responsible, informed citizens. A capable staff will guide the delegates through the levels of local, county and state government, a mock court, and much more.

Juniors Sierra Swank, and Erin Pula, were chosen as this years delegates and will participate in the 2017 Session of Montana American Legion Auxiliary Girls State, Sunday, June 11 through Saturday, June 17 at Carroll College in Helena.

American Legion Boys State is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for high school students.

Then American Legion organized Boys State in 1935 to counter the fascist inspired Young Pioneer Camps.

Participation in Boys State exposes boys to the rights, privileges, duties and responsibilities of a franchised citizen. The training is objective and practical where students are elected to various offices, and function in those offices.

Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands and chorus as well as recreational programs.

Three students from Chinook High School were chosen to attend this years Boys State, JJ Colby, Jacob Huckabee, and Garrett Lowham. Montana Boys State 2017 is June 4th- 9th at Carroll College in Helena, Montana.

American Legion Posts sponsor high school juniors to attend the program. Our local American Legion post pays the expenses associated with attending the program.
