We've Got The County Covered
Chinook Public Schools is off to a great start. Our enrollment numbers are 207 students in the elementary, 62 in the middle school and 107 in the High School. Over the last three years we have witnessed a drop of thirty students in the High School. We have had a small growth in the elementary which at this time is filled close to the maximum per class students that we can accommodate in some grade levels.
Our staff turnover was very low from last year as we welcome one new teacher, Marcel Top Sky, in the art program and Krista Drugge in the Kitchen. We have several other classified positions being recommended at the next School Board Meeting.
Chinook Athletics is out to a good start with roughly 40% percent of the student body out for football, volleyball and cheer team. Our middle school numbers show over half of the student body involved in a program. As an education statistic to think about is each activity a student is involved in raises their overall grade point average by half a letter grade.
A couple budget facts for everyone to ponder is the reduction of oil and gas revenues have gone from roughly over 1 million dollars in 2007 to roughly over 105,000 dollars last year. The changes in oil and gas prices and legislation as changed those revenues for schools as well as other state and county entities. Another legislative change has removed block grants from school budgets and replacing those dollars with local taxes. As we continue to research the impacts of the tax information we see a small decrease in our elementary taxes and a slight increase in our high school taxes. As Board of Trustees and Administrative team we are working very hard to be fiscally responsible along with providing a strong academic program for our students.
We have a home football game against Cascade on September 8th, starting at 4:30 pm for the junior high and 7 pm for the high school.
