Head Coach Laramie Schwenke addresses her team during a time our against Glasgow. The Harlem Lady Cats finished the regular season with 15-3 overall record and a 7-1 mark in the District 2B. Harlem enters the District 2B as the No. 2 seed and has already assured themselves of a spot at the Northern B Divisional in Cut Bank March 1-3.
Chinook senior Sierra Swank had a huge fourth quarter Friday against the North Star Knights, scoring 13 of her game high 21 points in the fourth quarter. The Sugarbeeters will open play at the District 9C tournament Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against Fort Benton.
Hays/Lodge Pole sophomore Mulleeah Stiffarm has shown the ability to score the ball this season and will look to lead the Thunderbirds as the begin play in the District 9C Tournament Thursday at 4:00 p.m. against Turner.
Junior Melanie Watkins and her Turner Tornado teammates finished as the No. 3 seed in the District 9C and open play this Thursday at 4:00 p.m. against the No. 6 seeded Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds.
The Turner Tornadoes were the big winners the final week of the regular season for area girls basketball teams as they picked up a pair of wins over the Chinook Sugarbeeters 59-44 on Tuesday and the Big Sandy Pioneers 50-32 on Monday. The Tornadoes were defeated by the Box Elder Bears on Friday 69-17.
The Harlem Wildcats saw their 14 game winning streak come to an end with a 49-38 setback to the Shelby Coyotes on Friday. Saturday Harlem suffered their first loss in District 2B play, a 64-50 setback to the Poplar Indians.
The final week of the season was also tough on the Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds as they fell twice over the weekend. Friday the Thunderbirds fell to the Fort Benton Longhorns 70-31 and Saturday the were defeated by the Box Elder Bears 77-29.
The Sugarbeeters dropped a 47-40 decision to the North Star Knights on Friday and then fell Saturday to the Fort Benton Longhorns 70-26
Turner began the week against the Chinook Sugarbeeters in contest played on Tuesday after weather forced a postponement last Saturday.
Turner opened up a 11-9 advantage after eight minutes of action and pushed the lead to six at 29-23 by intermission. The teams traded basket in the third quarter with each team scoring 12 as they headed to the fourth quarter with Turner up 41-35 after Chinooks Sierra Swank scored to beat the buzzer.
Junior Riley Conlan opened the fourth for the Tornadoes with a basket and junior Melanie Watkins followed with a basket of her own to push the lead to ten at 45-35.
Sophomore Sarah Billmayer scored and Riley soon followed with another score. Junior Reagen Conlan finished a fast break to put Turner up 51-37. Watkins offensive rebound and score on the ensuing possession pushed the lead to 16 as Turner secured 59-44 win.
Rylee scored 13 in the win to lead the Tornadoes while Chinook was paced by senior Erin Pula with 10 points.
The Harlem Lady Cats had their 14 game winning streak snapped Friday against Shelby. Harlem trailed 8-4 after one and 18-10 by intermission but weren't able to close the gap in the second half falling 49-38. Junior Skylee Dirden paced the offensive attack with 16 points.
Saturday Harlem faced the once beaten Poplar Indians in a battle for the District 2B regular season crown. The Lady Cats defeated Poplar earlier in the season but were unable to complete the sweep Saturday.
The Indians started fast and never looked back as they opened up a 22-8 advantage over Harlem after one quarter.
The Lady Cats continued to play hard but were unable to trim a point off the deficit falling 64-60 in the regular season finale.
Dirden again led the team with 16 markers in the contest.
The Turner Tornadoes (11-7) will enter the District 9C girls tournament as the No. 3 seed and will take on the No. 6 seeded Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds (3-14, 3-11) in first round action. Tip off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
The Chinook Sugarbeeters (5-13, 3-11) will be the No. 7 seed and will open with the Fort Benton Longhorns (16-2, 12-2). Their first round game will tip off following the conclusion of the Turner Hays/Lodge Pole contest.
The winners of each of these games will face each other Friday evening at 5:30 in a semifinal contest. The losers will face each other Friday morning in loser out action with tipoff scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
On the other side of the bracket in the girls tournament will be No. 1 seeded Box Elder (18-0, 14-0) taking on No. 8 Big Sandy (1-17, 1-13) Thursday at 11:00 a.m. Following the conclusion of that game will be the No. 4 seeded Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hawks (12-6, 8-6) taking on the No. 5 Seed North Star Knights (9-9, 7-7).
The consolation final and championship final will take place Saturday night with the first game being played at 7:00 p.m.
The top three finishers will advance to the Northern C Divisional in Great Falls next week.
