We've Got The County Covered
February at Harlem Elementary means tons of reading fun. To kick off "I Love To Read" month activities, the students began a reading frenzy, each striving to reach their Accelerated Reader goals. Every AR test the students passed meant they earned a segment (circle) with their name and the title of each book. These segments formed the "I Love To Read" Bookworm, which by the end of the month, circled the entire inside of the Elementary School! Hard-working students reaching their AR goals for the month were rewarded with delicious cake and ice cream.
During the last week of February, the days were filled with extra Dr. Seuss themed activities, including wearing pajamas, green clothes, wacky clothes, and shirts with lots of words. Additionally, everyone carried a book at all times in anticipation of the "Stop, Drop, and Read" song which played randomly over the intercom, signaling everyone to begin reading, no matter where they were, or what they were doing. Family Literacy Night was also held to add to the enjoyment, allowing students and their families the opportunity to join in making crafts such as green eggs and ham slime, popsicle stick characters, tactile art, plus pinning the bow on Dr. Seuss' Cat in the Hat. To top the evening off, everyone enjoyed cookies, and of course, a thirst quenching green drink.
Friday, March 2nd, and Dr. Seuss' birthday, capped off the month with an all school assembly. Each grade level's top reader was awarded a gift certificate to purchase Scholastic books. All 2nd place winners chose from a colorful array of posters. The top overall reader from the entire elementary was sixth grader, Alaura Hawley, who received a $75.00 gift certificate to be used with her future Scholastic orders.
Finally, the grand finale of the assembly, and "I Love To Read" month began, featuring Principal Shiloh Seymour, and rolls upon rolls of duct tape! Each student that met their reading goal received a long strip of sticky duct tape to entrap their good-natured principal to the gym wall. By the time the students used up their tape, Ms. Seymour looked like a caterpillar trying to emerge from its silvery cocoon. What a fun-tastic ending to an exciting reading- filled month!
