The Chinook Sugarbeeter volleyball team is off to a great start this fall in the District 6C-East as they improved to 2-0 with a 3-0 sweep of the rival North Star Knights last Thursday. They began the week with a 3-1 loss to the M-ettes on the road last Tuesday.
In Malta, the 'Beeters recorded 10 kills in the opening set but struggled at the net with nine errors allowing the M-ettes to earn a 25-18 first set win.
The Sugarbeeters evened the match in set number two, topping the M-ettes 25-21. Malta would regain control of the match in set number three with a 25-19 set win and closed out the match with a 25-19 win in the fourth set to earn the 3-1 win over the Sugarbeeters.
The 'Beeter attack led to 39 kills in the match but 31 hitting errors proved to much to overcome. Senior Kourtney Hanson paced the 'Beeter offense with 14 kills on the night, while sophomore Hailey Bell added eight.
Sophomore Ginger Hauer set up the hitters with a team high 21 assists, senior Megan Molyneaux added 11 in the match for the Sugarbeeters. Hanson and Hauer each served three aces and the team dug up 65 balls, led by senior Lincy Johnson's 28, Molyneaux added 15 and senior Ashley MacLeod 14.
Thursday the Sugarbeeters hosted the rival North Star Knights in a District 6C-East clash between two of the top teams in the district.
Chinook started fast and never let up in a 3-0 sweep of the Knights. The 'Beeter offense slammed home 10 kills in a opening 25-17 set win. The Sugarbeeters held serve in set number two, squeaking out a hard fought 26-24 win that swung the momentum all the way in Chinooks favor.
The Sugarbeeters finished off the Knights with a 25-21 third set win to remain undefeated in conference play.
Hanson again led the 'Beeter attack with 13 kills in the win, Molyneaux added 10 more as the team recorded 30 kills in the match.
The back row again played well, keeping possessions alive with 57 digs in the three set win. Hauer dug up 11 balls while Johnson was responsible for 11 more. Hauer also led the team with 21 of the teams 25 assists. Johnson added four aces in the 'Beeters win.
Chinook will face two more conference foes this week as they travel to Box Elder on Thursday to take on the Bears (1-0). Saturday they will travel to Hays to Face the Thunderbirds (0-1).
With the split the 'Beeters move to 3-1 on the season in match play.. The 'Beeters will stay on the road the following week to face the Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hawks and a huge District 6C-East match on Friday, September 21. Their next home match will take place on Saturday, September 22 when they will welcome the Fort Benton Longhorns to town.
Homecoming is set for Thursday September 27th when they will welcome the Big Sandy Pioneers to town.
