Hays/L.P. gets first win, 46-36 over Cascade

The Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds have played hard this season but unfortunately they hadn’t been able to find the win column. That all changed this past weekend when the Thunderbirds headed to cascade to take on the Badgers.

The Thunderbirds jumped out to an early lead and then maintained their composure down the stretch to hold on for a 46-26 win over the Cascade Badgers.

The Thunderbirds are a young, inexperienced team but head coach Josh Werk has the program headed in the right direction. “The kids played well, really well and showed a lot of heart after Cascade closed to within two in the third quarter,” said Werk.

Senior Moke Cliff had a superb game for the Thunderbirds picking 219 yards on the ground with two touchdowns. Cliff also hauled in a catch for 17 yards. Senior Kyle Young Jr. played very well from the Quarterback positions throwing for a pair of touchdowns on the day, both to senior wideout Jeremy Pretty Paint.

Sophomore Defensive End Nick Maget led the defense with 10 tackles and has been a force all season for the Thunderbirds. “He’s one of those do anything players, I can plug him in anywhere and he can play,” added Werk.

The Thunderbirds will honor their seniors today (Wednesday) when they go for a second straight win to close out the season against the Rocky Boy Northern Stars.

“We’ve had are chances this season we played Belt well and had a chance. A slow start against Box Elder negated a great comeback for our kids. We’ve gotten better and I’m proud of their effort,” concluded Werk.
