The Turner boys and girls basketball season got their 2018-19 seasons under way this past weekend with a pair of games at the Class C Showcase in Glasgow.
The boys picked up a 64-29 win over Frazer Friday night while the girls fell to Scobey 54-46. Saturday it was the girls picking up the win, 54-38 over North Country. The boys fell to Lustre 52-44.
The Tornado girls got as three point bomb from junior Sarah Billmayer in the opening quarter against the Spartans but trailed 22-9 after eight minutes of action.
Sophomore Shyan Krass scored her first basket of the new season by draining a bomb from beyond the arc. She added five more baskets in the stanza scoring 13 of the teams 16 points as the Tornadoes trimmed the deficit to 27-25 by intermission.
Krass added six more points in the third quarter and junior Melanie Watkins added four. Senior Raegan Conlan chipped in four as well to help propel Turner to a 42-39 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
The offense struggled down the stretch scoring just four points in the stanza giving way to a 54-46 season opening loss.
Krass led the Tornado effort with 21 points while Watkins finished with 13.
Saturday the Turner girls jumped out to a 19-14 lead early. Krass knocked down another three and scored seven in the opening quarter.
The Tornadoes added 10 more in the second and third quarters before finishing strong with 15 fourth quarter points and securing a 54-38 win to even their record at 1-1. Junior Sarah Billmayer led the offensive attack with 16 points in the win, including a pair from beyond the arc. Krass finished with 13 in the win. Sophomore Brooke Reed added six for the Tornadoes.
On the boys side it was Turner running away from Fazer in the opener, coasting their way to a 64-29 season opening win.
Senior Tracer Heilig scored four early as did senior Cody Welsh. The Tornadoes also got a three point bomb from junior Jack Harmon propelling the Tornadoes to a 14-3 adavantage heading into the second quarter.
Harmon connected twice more from long range as did Cody Welsh and sophomore Austin Welsh. The Tornadoes scored 17 in the stanza and led 31-14 at intermission.
Sophomore Shane Kimmel found himself at the charity stripe much of the third quarter, knocking down 4-7 free throws helping Turner to maintain a 41-20 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Cody Welsh finished the game strong with 12 points in the fourth to finish with 25 points in a 64-29 Tornado win. Harmon added 11 and Kimmel 10 in the win.
Saturday the boys got a pair of three pointers from Harmon in the first quarter against Lustre but trailed 13-11 after eight minutes. Kimmel converted 6-8 free throws and scored 10 points in the second as Turner led 26-24 at the break.
Cody Welsh would tally seven in the both the third and fourth quarters, finishing with 19 points in the contest. Kimmel finished with 13 but the Tornadoes were defeated in the end 52-45 to even their record at 1-1.
Both the boys and girls are off this weekend and will return to the court, Friday December 14 when they will welcome the North Star Knights to town.
