We've Got The County Covered

Chinook High School Student Council gets active in the community

The Chinook High School Student Council has become very active and is looking for ways to make an impact within their school as well as their community.

This past Thursday a number of students on the council made their way to the local food bank to assist with the food truck early that morning. While there the students recognized the need of the Food Bank and the emptiness of it's cupboards.

"My hope at the beginning of the year was that student council was not just about attending the meetings, but actually students voicing their ideas and acting on them. I think we've accomplished this goal so far this year," said Student Council President Kourtney Hanson.

"We're planning to do a fundraiser within the Chinook schools this spring for the local food pantry, and plan to do a similar fundraiser again in the fall, to benefit the Montana Make-a-Wish Foundation," stated Hanson.

Each fall at the State Student Council Convention is held, this past fall it was held in Laurel. Four students from Chinook attended; Paxtin McCann, Abigail Hamilton, Lily Surber and Kendra McMaster took part in the three day event. A total of $9,000 was raised for the Make -a-Wish Foundation.

Student Council members include: Kourtney Hanson, President; Hunter Neibauer, Vice President; Ashley MacLeod, Secretary/Treasurer;Isaac Bell, Parliamentarian.

Members at large, composed of class Presidents and Student Council Representatives, include: Cristin Friede, Paxtin McCann, Cristina Shackelford, Raynee Hasler, Abigail Hamilton, Kendra McMaster, Lily Surber, Izayah Abayomi, Rebecca Stroh, Allison Powell, Daniel Semenze, and Liam Edwards.

Hanson also serves as the District President and Surber as the District Secretary.

The Council has certainly been more active than ever before, in addition to helping with the food truck, which the plan to continue doing they have sponsored the Homecoming BBQ, helped with the dunking booth at the Sugarbeet Festival to benefit the Jesse James Memorial Foundation, organized the Christmas movie day, and has an ink recycling project underway. They are also in the process of organizing a student ski trip to Showdown in March.

Within the school itself the work done by the Council is easy to recognize.

This fall they introduced a coffee cart in the library, which according to Advisor Fay Friede, "Has been a welcome addition, adding to the relaxing atmosphere and giving students an enjoyable option while studying. It pairs well with the beautiful chairs and rug in the library that were purchased with a donation from the Jesse James Memorial Foundation."

Proceeds from the coffee cart as well as an upcoming sandwich fundraiser will be used to send student council members to the state student council convention next fall. "It's a well-organized, energetic leadership conference with amazing speakers and useful breakout sessions. It has conflicted with District volleyball the past two years, but I take as many students as I can and it's been a really rewarding experience for them" said Friede.
