We've Got The County Covered
Harlem Elementary students and staff celebrated 'I Love to Read' month by joining in all of the super exciting activities throughout February, which proved to be perfect timing in order to combat the frigid temperatures and those dreadful winter doldrums.
With so many happenings on the agenda, Harlem students were able to participate in activities ranging from the competitive Accelerated Reader (AR) Challenge to completing the Bookworm segments throughout every hallway in the elementary, which by the way, was accomplished.
The last week of 'I Love to Read' month found students and faculty wearing 'Readable' shirts and funny hats, dressing up as favorite super heroes, dressing as favorite book characters, and sporting fun pajamas as they read by flashlights and glow sticks in their darkened 'Night-time" rooms. The students also had a blast as partner readers, sharing the love of reading with younger students, and participating in the ever popular, 'Stop, Drop, and Read' sessions.
The AR competition really heated up as meeting the grade level goals meant being invited to the yummy ice cream sundae party. Not only did the AR points count individually, but added up to some very impressive totals in the winning classrooms. With the points tallied and the prizes in order, the avid readers were honored with a schoolwide assembly.
Elementary librarian, Ms. Kim Cornell, presented the top two booklovers who had the most AR points from each grade level with fantastic awards; 1st place winners received Scholastic Book Order credit, and second place finishers were able to choose beautiful posters.
The top overall reader, Riley Walls, was honored with a whopping $100 to purchase Scholastic books for his own library. Additionally, the classrooms with the highest total AR points for the month of February were rewarded with certificates and Scholastic Book money to buy books for their classrooms.
All in all, 'I Love to Read' month was filled with enjoyable reading activities, and experiences for both the students and the staff of Harlem Elementary. Although February and 'I Love to Read' month has ended, Harlem Elementary students have proven once again that the love of reading will continue on forever!
