We've Got The County Covered
Montana Actors Theater (MAT) is immersed in rehearsals for the MAT Youth Production, which this summer will be She Kills Monsters. If area youth missed the auditions on June 14 and June 15, they still have an opportunity to pursue MAT’s touring KidsMAT Summer Children’s Theatre camps.
According to promotional materials, the Youth Production will feature a comedic romp into the world of fantasy role-playing games. She Kills Monsters tells the story of Agnes Evans as she leaves her childhood home in Ohio following the death of her teenage sister, Tilly. When Agnes finds Tilly’s Dungeons and Dragons notebook, she stumbles into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was Tilly’s refuge. In this dramatic comedy laden with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres, and 90s pop culture, acclaimed young playwright Qui Nguyen offers a homage to the geek and warrior within us all.

According to MAT Artistic Director Jay Pyette, children and young adults will fill all of the available roles in She Kills Monsters. The Youth Production aims to provide middle and high school-aged students the opportunity to participate in fully-staged productions. Participants learn every aspect of theatrical production and develop the discipline to create a polished, professional show. This year’s production will run for six performances, July 25-27 and August 1-3.
In addition to its Youth Production, MAT offers touring KidsMAT Summer Children’s Theatre camps. KidsMAT Children’s Theatre Camps are week-long acting camps in Havre and surrounding communities. Each camp runs Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with a public performance on each Thursday in the evening.
A summer-time educational performing arts camp for children grades K-8 KidsMAT creates an environment that encourages creative growth through theatre performance, management, and production. KidsMAT takes theatre camp to a new level by encouraging youth to take part in every aspect of the creative process. Through collaboration and with guidance, theater campers develop the story, create the costumes, build the set, and perform the play. Camp fees include a t-shirt and water bottle. Scholarships are available.
Under the mentorship of Pyette, the first KidsMAT camp met in Havre on June 10-13. Additional Havre camps will run July 29-August 1 and August 12-15.
KidsMAT was in Box Elder June 17-20 and in Rocky Boy June 24-27. After the fourth, MAT will be in Shelby July 8-11, in Chinook July 15-18, and in Hay-Lodgepole August 5-8.
As a culmination of each week’s camp activities, KidsMAT will present scripted productions in each community on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. These short productions will be free of charge.
Registration forms for the camps are available on the MAT website (www.mtactors.com) and in Chinook at the Chamber Office, Liquor Store, and Chinook Pharmacy.
