We've Got The County Covered
On Monday, December 16, the Chinook Chapter of the FFA held its Greenhand Degree dinner in the Chinook High School shop. Members of the Chinook Chapter of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) and the Family and Consumer Science classes did the cooking and the serving.
According to the FFA Chapter’s Advisor, Robin Allen, all first year high school members generally earn the Greenhand Degree, which is an award given to first-year high school students who have demonstrated a thorough understanding of the history and purpose of FFA, are enrolled in an agricultural education program, and have satisfactory plans for a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE). Those who apply for the degree must also
• Own or have access to the Official FFA Manual and the Official FFA Student Handbook
• Explain the meaning of the FFA Creed
• Recite from memory the FFA motto and the Salute
• Describe and explain the FFA emblem, symbols, and colors
• Explain the proper use of the FFA Jacket
• Understand the FFA Code of Ethics
• Identify the historical highlights of the National FFA Organization and develop an awareness of the local chapter constitution and bylaws and the chapter Program of Activities
• Know the duties and responsibilities of FFA members and have an understanding of the organization’s aim and purposes.
Under the supervision of the FCCLA Advisor, Hope Hamilton, the FCCLA served a meal consisting of chuck roast donated by Lori Swanson, a starch, vegetable, green salad, and dessert. The dessert was a tuile cookie basket.
“I am drawn to the pastry arts,” Hamilton said. “My Baking and Pastry Arts class already makes tuile cookies, which are thin, crisp, and delicate cookies that can be formed into different shapes while they are still hot. We shaped these into baskets and served them filled with vanilla ice cream and topped with chocolate.
FCCLA is a national career and technical student organization that provides personal growth, leadership development, and career preparation opportunities for students in Family and Consumer Sciences education.
