The Chinook Sugarbeeters and the Harlem Wildcats continued their winning ways this past weekend with each team picking up a pair of always important conference wins. Meanwhile the Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds and Turner Tornadoes continue to compete for 32 minutes each time out, but just haven't been able to notch that first win.
The 'Wildcats improved to 5-0 following a 69-59 win over the Malt Mustangs in their District 2B and home opener Friday night. The Wildcats followed that up with another home win Saturday over conference foe Wolf Point 63-57. Chinook began District 9C Friday evening at home against the visiting Big Sandy Pioneers and walked away with a hard fought 68-53 win. Saturday the boys were in Box elder where they scored the first four points of the contest and never looked back in a lopsided 77-40 win to improve to 4-0.
The Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds had their home opener Friday night in the Thunderdome but were unable to top the North Star Knights in dropping their District 9C opener 67-59. Saturday in Big Sandy the Thunderbirds were never able to gain any momentum in a 77-63 loss to the Pioneers. Turner began District 9C play with a road trip to Fort Benton to take on the Longhorns. Fort Benton scored early and often in taking down the Tornadoes 87-45. Saturday at home the Tornadoes played hard but fell to the Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hawks 70-58.
The Chinook Sugarbeeters and Big Sandy Pioneers met in Chinook Friday night in the District 9C opener for both teams. Chinook and Big Sandy both have high expectations for the season and Friday nights contest would be a good litmus test for both teams.
The 'Beeters always seemed to be in control of the contest but just when you thought they were about to open a big lead, the Pioneers would hit a long three or make a couple free throws and trim the 'Beeter advantage to two or three possessions.
Chinook led 21-14 after eight minutes of action with junior Ethan Bell draining a pair of long threes and scoring 10 points in the opening stanza. Big Sandy shaved a point off the 'Beeter advantage in the second sending the teams to intermission with Chinook on top 33-27.
Bell added nine more points in the third quarter and Chinook put 20 on the board in the quarter to extend their advantage to 53-41 with eight minutes remaining. The Pioneers would make a run in the fourth, as they did all game long but in the end Chinook was to much. Junior Ethan MacLeod scored a couple and ones down the stretch to help the home team secure a 68-53 win.
Bell led the way with 25 points in the win, senior Hunter Neibauer added 13 and MacLeod finished with 10.
Saturday the 'Beeters were in Box Elder looking to close out 2019 on a roll. Chinook did just that taking a 16-10 lead into the second quarter and then turning in a 20 point second quarter effort to lead 36-16 at the break following a buzzer beating three pointer from MacLeod.
Box Elder would never challenge after the half and Chinook found a nice rhythm on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball to run away from the bears and take a 77-40 win. Bell scored 17 to lead the 'Beeter scoring, sophomore Toby Niederegger added 13, Neibauer 12 and sophomore Benton Elliot chipped in eight.
The Harlem Wildcats are off to a fantastic start and remained perfect after a solid weekend on the court in District 2B play. The Wildcats were at home Friday night taking on the Malta Mustangs in the conference opener for both squads.
Harlem took control early as six players found the scoring column in the first quarter to help the Wildcats take an earl 17-9 lead. Senior Brad Cichosz converted a pair from beyond the arc in the second and sophomore RJ Ramone added a triple of his own in helping Harlem take a 34-19 halftime lead.
Cichosz added eight more in the third quarter and sophomore Daniel Lawrence found his mark from long range, keeping the home team in the lead 50-44 heading into toe fourth. The Wildcats proved their metal down the stretch in holding off the visitors to earn a 69-59 win. Cichosz led all scorers with 29 points for the Wildcats in the win. The senior converted 7-10 from the charity stripe on the night.
Saturday the Wildcats were back playing in front of their home town fans, taking on the Wolf Point Wolves in another District 2B clash.
Looking to get off to another fast start the Wildcats got six first quarter points from Lawrence and four apiece from Cichosz and junior Jehton Long Fox scoring 16 in the opening quarter. The Wolves scored 17 and the Wildcats found themselves down one early.
Cichosz caught fire in the second, knocking down a long triple and eight of Harlem's 20 second quarter points to help the Wildcats take a 36-26 halftime lead.
The Wolves trimmed a point off the Harlem lead in the third outscoring the Wildcats 15-14 in the stanza. Harlem, however would turn their 50-41 advantage into a 63-57 win and improve to 5-0 on the season.
Cichosz again provided then necessary power for the Wildcats, tossing in 23 points in the win. Long Fox added 14 to the Wildcat effort and Lawrence chipped in 10.
The Hay/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds played in the Thunderdome for the first time this season Friday night, welcoming the North Star Knights to town in the District 9C opener for both teams. Hays/Lodge Pole led 16-12 early but a big second quarter for the Knights led to a 67-59 loss for the Thunderbird senior Wyman Bring Good led the way with 22 points. Saturday Hays/Lodge Pole was in Big Sandy where they would fall 77-63, dropping their record to 0-4 to start the season.
The Turner Tornadoes began the conference portion of their schedule Friday night in Fort Benton against the Longhorns. Turner never got started and the Long horns ran away with a 87-45 win.
Saturday, Turner was at home taking on the Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hawks and playing in front of the home town fans for the first time this year. Turner turned in a valiant effort but in the end they were on the losing side of a 70-58 scoreboard. Junior Shane Kimmel blistered the nets for 23 points while junior Austin Welsh turned in a strong 22 point effort.
