Lady Cats edge Malta 48-47, now 5-0; Chinook, Hays/L.P., Turner earn splits

The final week of action on the hardwood in 2019 saw all four Blaine County girls basketball teams find the win column. The Harlem Lady Cats edged out the 48-47 Friday night in their District 2B and Home opener Saturday the 'Cats clobbered the Wolves 63-40 to finish 2019 with a perfect 5-0 mark.

The Hay/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds improved to 3-1 after a 62-14 thumping of the Big Sandy Pioneers Saturday on the road. The Tornadoes enter the holiday break at 2-2 following a lopsided 70-34 win over the visiting Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hawks Saturday afternoon. The Chinook Sugarbeeters picked up their first win of the season Friday night in their District 9C and home opener, defeating the Big Sandy Pioneers 47-34.

The Harlem Lady Cats end 2019 with a perfect 5-0 record after surviving their toughest test of the season Friday night and the blasting the Wolf Point Wolves Saturday afternoon. The Lady Cats welcomed the Malta M-ettes to town Friday evening in their District 2B and home opener.

The Lady Cats found themselves in a battle early on trading baskets with the visitors throughout much of the first half. The two powerhouses finished the first quarter all knotted up at 15-15. Malta would gain a bit of an edge in the second stanza and earned a 27-23 advantage by halftime. The Lady Cats are a very savvy, playoff tested team and battled their way back in the third quarter to trim the deficit to a single point heading into the fourth, 37-36.

In a pressure packed final eight minutes the Lady Cats were able to do just enough to retake the lead and complete the comeback, knocking off the M-ettes 48-47 in an early season thriller. Senior L'Tia Lawrence led the way with 20 points in the huge conference win.

Saturday afternoon the Lady Cats were back in their home gym taking on the Wolf Point Wolves. Harlem would have a much easier go of it Staurday as they controlled the tempo from the opening tip. After taking a 13-7 lead into the second quarter the Lady Cats pushed their advantage to 25-16 by the break and 41-24 to start the fourth quarter. The Lady Cats kept their foot on the gas down the stretch, scoring 22 fourth quarter points en route to a comfortable 63-40 win to improve to 5-0 on the season.

Sophomore Taya Trottier led the offensive attack with 16 points in the win. Senior Kailee Henry added 14 and Lawrence chipped in 12.

The Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds dropped their first contest of the year in their District 9C and home opener against the North Star Knight. The Thunderbirds trailed 14-12 after one quarter but the visiting Knights extended their advantage to 31-20 by halftime. Hays/Lodge Pole could cut into the deficit down the stretch, losing 62-42. Sophomore Tahtianna Morgan led the effort with 15 markers in the contest.

Saturday the Thunderbirds were in Big Sandy and wasted little time in securing their third win of the season. Hays/L.P. held the Pioneers to just two first quarter points while scoring 15 of their own and took a 36-7 lead into the second half. The Thunderbirds cruised to an easy 62-14 District 9C win. Four players were in double figures for the Thunderbirds, junior Ella Messerly scored 13, freshman Nashone Shambo 10, Morgan 10 and sophomore Jaedyn Chandler 10.

The Turner Tornadoes will take a 2-2 record into the holiday break following a weekend split. Friday the girls were in Fort Benton to take on the Longhorns. Senior Sarah Billmayer scored eight of Turner's 12 first quarter points to help the team stay in striking distance heading into the second, down 17-12.

Fort Benton outscored the Tornadoes 14-6 over the next eight minutes to take a 31-18 halftime lead. Turner was never able to right the ship in the second half, falling 73-43 in the District 9C opener. Junior Brooke Reed led the attack with 14 points while Billmayer added nine.

Saturday, Turner entertained the Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hawks in their home opener and gave the hometown fans all they could ask for. Billmayer scored seven first quarter points to go along with junior Shyan Krass' 11 to power the Tornado attack and take comfortable 23-6 lead into the second quarter of action.

Billmayer added a pair of three point bombs and 11 second quarter points and the Tornadoes ran away from the Hawks the remainder of the contest. Turner led 42-14 at intermission and coasted to a 70-34 win to even their record at 2-2. Billmayer and Krass each blistered the nets for 22 points in the win and Reed added 14 in a solid performance.

The Sugarbeeters found the win column Friday night on the strength of a 15 point effort from sophomore Allison Powell. The 'Beeters trailed 18-8 entering the second but turned the tables by halftime to take a 18-17 lead into the locker room.

Chinook came out firing in the second half and pulled away for a 47-34 win. Powell scored 11 second half points to help propel the 'Beeter offense. Junior Jayden Miller added 13 to the cause and junior Lily Surber chipped in nine.

Saturday the 'Beeters were in Box Elder to take on the Bears. Chinook hung in the contest early, trailing 16-10 early but trailed 34-16 at intermission and were defeated 62-33 to fall to 1-3 on the season. Powell again led the offense, scoring nine in the contest.
