Turner blows past Dodson, Box Elder, Harlem and Hays/Lodge Pole pick up wins

The Turner Tornadoes began the new year by picking up a non-conference win, 59-24, at home Friday night. Saturday the girls continued their ways in Box Elder where they had the scoreboard operator on their toes, earning a 82-60 win over the Bears in a District 9C tilt.

The Harlem Lady Cats remained perfect on the season, adding win number six Saturday afternoon. Harlem topped the Rocky Boy Morning Stars 86-52 to improve to 6-0.

The Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds turned in a valiant effort Friday night at home before falling to the Fort Benton Longhorns 69-47. Saturday in Chinook they earned a 67-34 win over the Sugarbeeters in a District 9C contest.

Chinook battled back from a 15 point second half deficit in Chester Friday night, cutting the Hawk lead to just four with under two minutes remaining. They could never get any closer and fell 47-40.

The Turner Tornadoes hosted the Dodson Coyotes Friday night in the teams first action of 2020. The Tornadoes took control early and never looked back

Turner led 16-3 early on, getting six points from senior Sarah Billmayer and four points apiece from juniors Shyan Krass and Brooke Reed.

The Tornadoes maintained their steady attack in the second stanza, taking a 16-5 advantage in the second quarter to build a 32-8 halftime cushion.

Billmayer connected from long range to help Turner maintain their consistency, scoring seven in another 16 point quarter for the Tornadoes.

Leading 48-14 to start the fourth, Turner was on cruise control the final eight minutes, picking up a 59-24 non-conference win. Billmayer led the way with 17 points while Krass finished with12.

Staurday the Turner squad hit the road for their first foray into District 9C action against the Box Elder Bears.

Krass took over the paint in the opening minutes scoring 10 points inside the arc for the Tornadoes. Billmayer added a long triple to help the Tornadoes take a 23-11 advantage into the second stanza.

If the Tornadoes have been one thing early on in the new year, its consistent. The girls added another 23 in the second quarter. Billmayer scored eight while Krass continued to control the flow in the post with 10 more points.

Leading 46-23 to start the third, the Tornadoes weren't looking to take their foot off the gas and tossed in 15 more to maintain a comfortable 61-41 lead entering the fourth quarter.

The Tornadoes put 21 more on the scoreboard down the stretch and walked away from the Bears Den 82-60 winners.

Krass had a huge night for the Tornadoes scoring 29 in the contest. Billmayer was stellar as well adding 26 points of her own.

The Harlem Lady Cats have been impressive all season long and can attack an opponent from multiple positions on the court. They also play very hard nosed stingy pressure defense start to finish.

Lady Cat senior Kailee Henry had her sights aligned perfectly in the teams first action of the new year. Henry drained three from long range in the opening quarter scoring 13 in the stanza as Harlem took a 22-13 lead.

The Lady Cats continued to attack the Morning Stars on both sides of the ball before the half, taking a 41-29 advantage into the halftime locker room.

Seniors L'Tia Lawrence, Taeshon Schaeffer and Aria Owens each connected from distance in the third quarter for the Lady Cats, pushing their lead to 15, 57-42 with eight minutes remaining.

Henry connected on her fifth triple of the contest in the fourth quarter and Lawrence and sophomore Taya Trottier combined for 16 points down the stretch to help push the Lady Cats to a 86-52 win over their District 1B rivals in Northern B action.

Henry finished with a game high 28 points, including the five triples. Trottier added 20 in the win as she continued her hot start to the season. Lawrence chipped in 19 more for the home team.

Friday the Thunderbirds were looking for a good showing against the District 9C Fort Benton Longhorns.

The Longhorns are considered to be a favorite to win that State C this year providing they can stay healthy. Head Coach Corey Morgan saw the opportunity as a good early season test to see where his squad is at.

The Thunderbirds are a vastly improved team having suffered through the growing pains of a very young squad a season ago. With a year under their belt, they have improved a lot and are doing so rapidly but every team needs to face the best to get better.

The Thunderbirds trailed by 15 early on but kept competing and were within nine early in the fourth before the Longhorns experience sent the Thunderbirds to a 69-47 defeat.

Saturday in Chinook the Thunderbirds responded with a strong outing against the Sugarbeeters.

Hays/L.P maintained their composure and steadily built on an early 15-9 lead. The Thunderbirds carried a 37-20 advantage into the intermission and 52-27 margin at the end of the third. In the end they picked up a 67-34 win.

Senior Mulleeah Stiffarm paced the attack with 18 points, including four from downtown. Judemia Gray and Jaedyn Chandler each scored 12 in the Thunderbird win
