Area Teams gearing up for Post Season Tournaments

The 11-1 Harlem Lady Cats demonstrated why they are one of the top Class B teams in the state in their class with two convincing wins over the weekend.

On Thursday, the Cats left Glasgow with a 52-43.

Super sophomore Taya Trottier led the Wildcats with 32 of their 52 points on Thursday against the Scotties. While most of her points came on breaks to the hoop, she also pitched in one 3-pointer and a free throw against Glasgow.

The Lady Cats were all business during their home court stand Friday against the visiting Lady 'Beeters. Crisp passing, quick moves to the hoop and anticipation in delivering and receiving passes were the rule rather than the exception for the No. 3-ranked team in Class B.

The Lady 'Beeters remained tenacious throughout the contest. Despite trailing 32-5 at the end of the first quarter and 57-9 at half time, they remained focused and never backed down.

The second half was played with a continuous clock under the state's 40-point mercy rule.

While Harlem got scoring punch from seven players, Chinook saw six Lady 'Beeters break into the scoring column.

Kailee Henry also hit double figures for the Lady Cats, while Allison Powell and Lily Surber led the Lady 'Beeters with 8 and 7 points, respectively.

Defense and offensive teamwork highlighted the Wildcats' efforts both nights.

Turner High's Lady Tornadoes pulled out a one-point win against the Lady Thunderbirds of Hays/Lodge Pole Friday evening, 58-57.

Shyan Krass led the way for the Turner squad with 29 points followed by Sarah Billmayer with 13. In all, five Tornadoes pitched in points.

The Lady T-Birds had three players in double digits, with Mulleeuh Stiffarm kicking in 16 points to go along with 13 by Ella Messerly and 12 by Judemia Gray.

Saturday night saw Turner invade the Lady 'Beeters' "Factory" and blow out of town with a 58-22 win.

The Lady Tornadoes opened the contest with three quick scores on a Shyan Krass shot and tip in and a Brooke Reed in-bounds steal and layup. Turner held the lead at the end of the first quarter, 16-3 and extended the lead to 32-11 going into the locker-rooms at halftime.

Turner added 26 points in the third quarter to 6 for Chinook. The teams entered the fourth quarter with the clock running. Turner went scoreless in the final stanza as the Lady Beeters added 5 to their total off 22.

Turner was led by Sarah Billmayer and Brandy Calvert with 15 points each. Shyann Krass added 12. Chinook once again collected points from several players.

On Saturday night, Lady T-Birds earned a 73-26 homecourt win over the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks. With the win, H/LP moved to 6-6 overall and 5-4 in conference.

This final weekend of 9C basketball has Chinook boys and girls teams hosting North Star and observing Senior Night Friday and traveling to Fort Benton on Saturday. Turner will host Big Sandy on Friday and travel to Gildford to face North Star on Saturday.

On Thursday, CJI will face off against Fort Benton and travel to Hays/Lodge Pole on Saturday.

The 9C District Tournament will tip off in Havre on Wednesday, Feb. 19.
