First Five Pages Project Provides an Antidote to Quarantine Monotony

Authors who write for the theater often have multiple unfinished projects, scripts that they have started but not completed. This fizzling of creative energy may derive from a loss of inspiration, a character’s failing to come to life, or a story arc that stalls.

Montana Actors Theater (MAT) is inviting all playwrights who’ve started scripts to submit only the first five pages, along with a character list and setting description—if available, but not required—of something they have written. These partial scripts will be published anonymously for the public to read and provide feedback. Deadline for submission is tomorrow, April 30.

“Even if you have never written a script before, this might be a good way to find out if people think you have what it takes,” explained MAT Executive Director, Jay Pyette. “This is not a contest, but a way to determine what kind of interest your script evokes!”

Anyone seeking a creative outlet and something to do during these times of quarantine is encouraged to locate the guidelines and submission form on the MAT website: mtactors.com. There, a downloadable template is provided, along with instructions on how to submit. Submissions are being limited to only one per writer.

The template includes a cover page, character list page, and setting page. These are not included in the five-page limit, as the page count begins after the setting page.

In order to be considered, scripts must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on April 30, using the submission form found on MAT’s website. After submission, playwright names will be removed and all scripts uploaded and available for review on May 2.

“Be brave! Submit those pages! Get the inspiration you need to continue writing while locked down in this crazy time!” Pyette exclaimed.
