We've Got The County Covered

Paul J. Ramberg

Paul J. Ramberg, 91, a long-time Bear Paw rancher and Chinook resident, died of natural causes early Monday morning, July 6th at the Sweet Memorial Home. A small graveside service was held for immediate family on Sunday the 12th of July and a community celebration of Paul's life will be held this fall with a date to be published in advance. The family hopes that as Covid accommodations change we will be able to publish a notice of the gathering on Facebook and in the Chinook Opinion.

Paul got his lifelong love of ranching while growing up on his parent's ranch, located at the confluence of the Little Box Elder and Morgette Creeks in the Bearpaw Mountains in Hill County, Montana. He became a very useful asset to the ranch operation at a young age and continued to enjoy this work after school, on weekends and during the summer months until he graduated from Chinook High School. During his grade school years he contributed greatly to getting his younger siblings Jim and Margaret to and from Faber School three miles from the ranch through the winter in all kinds of weather. Upon graduation from High School Paul worked for numerous cattle ranches in the Bear Paw Mountains and for the Farmers Union in Chinook until Uncle Sam decided that he was needed in the Army and drafted him in October of 1954. By that time he was married to Helen Kuhr and they had set up a home in Chinook. In April of 1955 Helen moved to Hawaii where Paul was stationed so that they could be together. They spent 16 months in Hawaii and during that time they were blessed with their first child Susan Marie. When they relocated back to Montana Paul and Helen moved to the Kuhr Ranch and Paul became a key contributor to the success of the ranch. When he wasn't busy with ranch work, Paul always had time for family and friends. He was a huge part of the 4-H community and made himself available to anyone that needed help with their animals. Paul was a kind man and there are many of the kids that he helped that still recall him fondly. Paul was a wonderful father and husband and gave tirelessly to make sure that everyone was taken care of. He also provided a great example of integrity and hard work for his family that will be appreciated for generations.

Paul's hobbies were, purebred Hereford cattle, horses of all kinds and being outdoors working with his hands. He and Helen loved to travel and loved visiting friends. Paul was also a Team Roper and Golfer and he always worked to support these activities in addition to just taking part. In later years, particularly after Helen passed away, Paul could be seen outside his home in Chinook, taking care of his prizewinning yard and garden. To the end he was a great example of how to make the best of every day and he will be missed by many on earth, but celebrated by many more in Heaven.
