3-2 Chinook falls to Simms in 80-42 in a Wild and Crazy Homecoming

The Chinook Sugarbeeters came into their Homecoming contest a little banged up. They were a lot banged up following a rough quarter and a half to end a 80-42 loss to the Simms Tigers.

Chinook came into the contest against Simms looking to put together a sustained opening drive. They accomplished that, moving the ball down field on a 12 play 55 yard drive. That first drive stalled however, deep in Simms Territory, turning the ball over to the Tigers after being stopped on fourth down.

The 'Beeters hoped to get some stops defensively as well, but on the first play from scrimmage the Tigers raced 72 yards to paydirt setting the tone for a long night for the 'Beeter defense.

Chinook's offense came to play, and got huge efforts from senior Reese Elliot, and juniors Hunter Molyneaux and Drake Berreth.

Elliot caught three balls on the first possession and started drive number two with a nine yard grab. Berreth then snagged a nicely thrown ball from senior quarterback Benton Elliot for eight more yards and a first down.

Berreth hauled in a diving catch for seven yards to keep the offense rolling. Berreth then broke free from his defender and made a spectacular catch that covered 37 yards setting the 'Beeters up in the red zone. Elliot capped the seven play, 71 yard drive with a nice six yard touchdown reception to even the score at 6-6.

The Tigers quickly moved down the field on the ensuing possession, scoring another touchdown and adding the two-point conversion for a 14-6 lead. Molyneaux returned the kickoff 73 yards and Reese Elliot caught the ball well above the defenders outstretched arms for the two-point conversion and a 14-14 tie.

Molyneaux then showed his presence on the defensive side of the ball, intercepting the Tigers to give the offense back the ball. Berreth made another great catch, this time for 32 yards and Molyneaux followed with a 15 yard scamper to give Chinook a 20-14 advantage with 7:00 minutes remaining in the first half.

The Tigers scored again to take the lead back 22-20 with 3:10 remaining but again the Chinook offense had an answer. Elliot picked up 22 yards on a fourth down pass to keep the drive alive, breaking a tackle for extra yards. Molyneaux scored again, this time from 22 yards out to give the 'Beeters back the lead 28-22 with 1:12 remaining in the half.

The crazy first half was far from done as the Tigers answered back with :37 left to retake the lead 30-28. Just 22 seconds later the Tigers were again in the end zone following an interception return for a short touchdown with :15 remaining.

The half wasn't over yet for the 'Beeters. Elliot found Berreth again for a 25 yard pickup to the Tiger 35 yard line. With time running out Elliot heaved the ball to sophomore Tyler Schoen for a 35 yard touchdown with no time left in the half. Berreth added the two-point conversion and the teams headed to halftime with the Tigers on top 38-36.

Simms scored first to start the third quarter to take a 44-36 lead. Chinook again responded, this time a 18 yard scoring strike from Elliot to Elliot to bring Chinook back within two at the 7:00 mark of the third quarter.

The Tigers returned the kickoff for a touchdown and added another to go up 58-42 with 4:50 left in the quarter.

Schoen appeared to return the Tiger kickoff for a 72 yard score but the play was negated by a hold. From that point on things went south for the 'Beeters.

Injuries to both running backs and to their linebackers and offensive line left the offense unable to mount a comeback.

The Tigers would add three more scores against the depleted 'Beeters, securing a 80-42 win.

The injury riddled 'Beeters will be back in action this Friday when they head to Choteau to take on the Bulldogs.
