Daffodil Sales Generate Almost $5,000 for Charitable Fund

During the month of March, Shores Floral & Gift held a daffodil sale as a way to contribute to the Northern Montana Health Care Foundation’s Serving of Hope fund. Owner of the shop, Bonnie Weber reported that Shores sold 700 bunches of daffodils, which approximates 7000 blooms, for a total of $4,900.00 donated.

Ever hopeful, Weber exclaimed: “Next year, we will aim for 1000 bunches!”

This birth flower of March, which was adopted by the American Cancer Society as its symbol of hope, is an appropriate bloom to herald in spring, renewal, and new beginnings. It also appropriately trumpets the “shout out” that Weber wishes to give to all of the volunteer helpers and those who bought daffodils.

Realizing that many people volunteer out of the goodness of their hearts and for the sake of service, not for the glory or attention, Weber still wished to celebrate those altruistic individuals who helped to make the flower sale a success.

Nancy Snider, Lucy Fairbank, Julianne LaSmith, Barb Kolar, Meredy Phares, Inez Halseth, Bettie Lou Stender, and Carol Johnsrud are credited with the role they played in daffodil sales. Furthermore, Terry Tilleman earned accolades for organizing daffodil pickup, and Ben Hall and Shirley Mackenzie deserve gratitude for their delivery services.

“We couldn’t have made our sizable donation without these volunteers and without all those who purchased daffodils, so thank you all,” Weber stated.

In the first weeks of March, several people reported receiving the blooms, and others posted pictures of their flowers on Facebook. Julie Terry, who teaches English at Chinook Junior/Senior High School reported that her mother, Nancy Schellin, dropped off a bunch of the unopened stems whose blooms didn’t appear until the next day. “The students walked in and were like, ‘We thought that was asparagus!’” Terry reported.
