We've Got The County Covered
On Thursday, April 1, Harlem Elementary School celebrated the end of I Love to Read month with the announcement of the schoolwide leader in Accelerated Reader (AR) points and the top three students from each grade level who had earned the most AR points.
Harlem Elementary students spent the month of March focused on reading books, taking AR tests, and amassing points. After all of the tests were scored and the points tallied, the top reader to emerge from grades K-6 was second grader, Oz Baker. He is the son of Rani and Jon Baker. For his hard work and extraordinary effort, Oz was awarded a Kindle Fire HD tablet.
Other winners included first place readers: Laylai Main (Kindergarten), Lizzy Baker (First Grade), Shadyn Speakthunder (Second Grade), Marcos Cortez (Third Grade), Johnathan Pursley (Fourth Grade), Jeremiah Brockie (Fifth Grade), and Gunnar Henry (Sixth Grade).
Those capturing second place honors were Sarah Pursley (Kindergarten), McKearen Stiffarm (First Grade), Manada Hart (Second Grade), Elias Filesteel (Third Grade), Lyle Snow (Fourth Grade), Kianna Mount (Fifth Grade), and Cy Arensmeyer (Sixth Grade).
Placing third were Brody Plumage (Kindergarten), Rooney Briere (Second Grade), Ashton Gone (Third Grade), Kingston Folk (Fourth Grade), Mila Wing (Fifth Grade), and Madison Mount (Sixth Grade).
The first place winners in each grades K-2 received $20.00 to spend on Scholastic books, while the second place winners earned $10.00 to purchase books, and those coming in third were awarded posters.
Students winning first in the third and fourth grade bracket received $30.00 for Scholastic books, while second place winners won $15.00 towards the purchase of books, and third place winners selected posters.
Finally, top readers in the fifth and sixth grades accepted $40.00 to purchase Scholastic books. Second place winners were given $20.00 to buy books, while third place winners again received posters.
All other students who met or exceeded the AR goals set specifically for their grade levels received I Love to Read themed prizes. These included various pencils, pins, bouncy balls, cards, mini erasers, and mini memo pads.
According to a school spokesperson, "Harlem Elementary is so very proud of Oz and all of our other students who put in the extra hours reading, testing, and experiencing the enjoyment of reading, not just for I Love to Read month but to develop an important and necessary life-long habit. Hats off to our great readers."
