'Beeter Girls 3rd at Northern C: State B in Laurel, State C in Missoula this week

The final weekend of the Montana High school 2020-21 Athletic calender is upon us. This sports year has clearly been unlike any other and following the cancellation of spring sports a season ago, the conclusion is probably more important than any other. To compete on the final weekend of any sports season means that you have without a doubt had a fantastic season. Regardless of the outcome, qualifying for the state tournament requires quite an effort.

This past weekend at the Northern C Divisional in Great Falls the Chinook Sugarbeeter girls shined as they fought their way to a third place finish with 48 points, narrowly edging out the Sunburst Refiners who tallied 46. The 'Beeter boys finished fourth with 32 points. In Glasgow the Harlem girls finished ninth overall while the boys were eleventh.

This weekend will feature the conclusion of the Class B (Laurel) and Class C (Missoula) Track and Field seasons with their respective State Meets. Blaine County will be well represented in both locations with 20 athletes still competing.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters will send senior Damon Hannum, junior Toby Niederegger and sophomores Tyler Schoen, Brenden Fetter, Levi Jensen and Braxton Inman for the boys. Six 'Beeter girls will be making the trip as well, including senior Jayden Miller, junior Kinley Hamilton, sophomore Aspyn Colby, sophomore Sasha Gallus and freshman Hallie Neibauer and Charlie McKee. The Turner Tornadoes will send senior Shyan Krass to the State C Representing the Tornadoes in three events.

The Harlem Wildcats will be represented in Laurel by seniors Andrew Rasmussen and Chloe Messerly, juniors Taya Trottier and Darrius Longknife as well as sophomores Amari Stanley, Keonna Medicine Bear and freshman Kaitlyn Johnson.

Harlem freshman Kaitlyn Johnson has been remarkable in her first season at the high school level in the 300 Meter Hurdles. Considering that the freshman never got to compete as an eighth grader a season ago, her performance has been truly exceptional. Saturday at the Northern B Divisional in Glasgow Johnson got off to a good start in her race, but was being challenged heavily by Cut Bank junior Jackie Waller by the first turn. The two sprinters matched each other step for step, hurdle by hurdle but in the sprint to the finish line it was Johnson breaking the tape three one hundredths of a second faster at :51.07 to win the event.

In Great Falls it was a test between the two top ranked high jumpers in all of Class C as Chinook junior Toby Niederegger and Cascade senior Conner Woodall met head to head for the first time. Niederegger cleared 6'3" at the District 9C while Woodall was one notch better at the District 10C clearing 6'4". At the Northern C Divisional it was Niederegger clearing 6'2" to win the event by two inches over Fort Benton senior Nick Marais. Woodall would end up third.

Niederegger will also compete at the State C in the 100 Meter Dash following a fourth place finish in Great Falls and will be joined in the event in Missoula by sophomore Brenden Fetter who had already pre-qualified. 'Beeter sophomore Braxton Inman will compete in the 300 Meter Hurdles in Missoula after placing third at the Northern C Wednesday. The 'Beeters 4x100 Relay (Niederegger, sophomore Tyler Schoen, Inman and Fetter), and the 4x400 Meter Relay (Niederegger, Inman, Fetter and senior Damon Hannum) will also head to Missoula. Sophomore Levi Jensen is an alternate for the relay.

Chinook senior Jayden Miller has been close to putting it all together in the Discus all season long and Wednesday at the Northern C Divisional she did just that. Miller had everything working in perfect order flipping the Discus a personal best 115'4" eclipsing her previous mark by ten full feet. As a result Miller edged out Belt junior Ahmia Lords by fourteen inches to win the event. Miller currently sits fourth in the State in the Class C rankings. The Class C top spot belongs to Nationally ranked senior Klaire Kovatch of Seeley Swan with a flip of 159' 3".

Miller will head to the State C in three events overall. The senior will also compete in the Shot Put following her fourth place finish at the Northern C with a mark of 31'10" 'Beeter junior Kinley Hamilton finished third in the event with a distance of 32'11" and will head to Missoula as well. Miller finished fifth in the Javelin as well with a throw of 95'0".

Chinook freshman Hallie Neibauer continues to impress and will compete in four events this week in Missoula at the Class C State Track and Field Meet. Neibauer sprinted to a third place finish in the 800 Meter race, completing the two laps in 2:34.90. Neibauer then added a fifth place finish in the 400 Meter Dash, crossing the finish line in 1:03.62. Neibauer currently stands at No. 8 in the state in the 400. Neibauer will also compete in the 200 Meter Dash in Missoula following a sixth place effort in Great Falls. She will join sophomore teammates Aspyn Colby and Sasha Gallus as well as freshman Charlie McKee in the 4x100 Meter Relay at the State C.

Turner senior Shyan Krass will represent the Tornadoes in Missoula at the State C Track and Field meet. Krass will close out her stellar high school career by competing in three events at the state meet. She finished third in the 1,600 Meter Run (6:01.60), fourth in the 3,200 Meter Run (13:13.10) and fifth in the Discus (97'0").

Harlem junior Taya Trottier leads the way for the Wildcat contingent. Trottier will head to the State B Tack and Field Meet at the Laural Sports Complex later this week after a strong showing at the Northern B Divisional in Glasgow. Trottier finished fourth in the 3,200 Meter run, completing the eight lap race in 13:00.93. She also added a fifth place finish in the 1,600 (5:55.21) and a fifth place finish in the 800 Meters (2:36.33). Senior Chloe Messerly will join Trottier at the State B in Laurel after she recorded a mark of 30'1.5" in the Shot Put to finish fifth. Sophomore Keonna Medicine Bear will be their as well after placing sixth in the High Jump (4'2").

For the boys the Wildcats are led by senior Andrew Rasmussen who will compete in the Long Jump after finishing third at the Northern B (19'0.5") and sixth in the 100 Meter Dash (:12.14). Sophomore Amari Stanley is headed to the State B in the Triple Jump (5th 38'7") while junior Darrius LongKnife will compete in the High Jump (6th 5'2").
