From Billings to Phoenix: Blaine County Athletes Continue to Perform at a High Level

July is a very busy month for many student athletes in Blaine County. The Big Sky State Games are being played over the course of three weeks in Billings and include everything from Table Tennis to Pickle Ball and Basketball.

The NABI (Native American Basketball Invitational) is back in action this year with the 18th Annual Tournament being played in Phoenix, Arizona. The tournament is back after being forced to cancel a year ago due to the Pandemic.

Add in the summer swim season winding down with the State Meet closing out July, students getting the final preparations done for the start of the high school fall season and suddenly a new school year is upon us.

Four Blaine County athletes were in Phoenix this past week. Soon to be Harlem senior Taya Trottier played for the Girls Rockhawk team that went 8-2 and reached the Elite 8 in the tournament.

2021 Chinook High graduate Ethan Bell was a member of the Warrior Movement squad that also reached the Elite 8 and finished with an 8-2 overall record.

2021 Harlem High graduate Trent Main and soon to be senior RJ Ramone played for the Boys Rockhawk team that reached the Sweet 16 in the 64 team tournament. Interestingly it was Bell's Warrior Movement team that eliminated the Rockhawks in loser out action.

In Billings, Harlem's Grace Moffett-Friede won the girls 15-18 10K race at the Big Sky State Games with a time of 45:35.04. Grace spends her summers in Harlem while going to school in Gig Harbor, Washington.

Chinook junior Anna Terry continued her busy summer of running road races by finishing second in the 15-18 10K in Billings with a time of 46:04.57.

The Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbird Girls Basketball team went 1-2 in the 11-12 grade Scholastic Tournament. They fell to a U17 team from Bozeman, then earned a one point, 32-31 win over Rocky Boy before falling to Hardin by three points.

There were a number of other Blaine County Athletes that performed very well at the Big Sky State Games this past weekend however official results had not been received or posted as of press time.
