Lady Cats drop 5 Set Thriller to Cut Bank, Fall to Malta, Rocky Boy

The Harlem Lady Cat Volleyball team has certainly been competitive each time they have taken the court. Unfortunately the game of volleyball can be very disparaging in its results.

Harlem went on the road last Tuesday to face the District 1B Cut Bank Wolves. In the opening set Harlem strung some good plays together and matched the Wolves step for step, but in the end it was Cut Bank that had the momentum last with a 25-19 set win.

Set number two saw the Lady Cats push the Wolves to the brink, but again it was Cut Bank that scored the final point in a 25-23 set win to go up 2-0.

In sticking with the theme of the Lady Cats competitiveness, facing defeat Harlem bounced back to win the third set 25-21. With momentum on their side they put their foot on the gas pedal and cruised to a 25-16 fourth set win to even the match at 2-2.

All the momentum seemed to be with the Lady Cats and the girls were looking to complete the comeback in set number five. The ball seemed to bounce the wrong way for the Lady Cats down the stretch with Cut Bank eking out a 15-12 set win to take the match 3-2.

Senior Chloe Messerly led the attack with nine kills on the night. Senior Vanice Little added seven more of her own the Harlem effort. Senior Jessica King set the hitters up with 12 Assists while also digging up 14 balls for the Harlem defense.

Back in front of the hometown fans on Friday night the Lady Cats took on a very talented Malta M-ette team. The Lady Cats fought hard in set number one before falling 25-20.

Sets number two and three were all Malta as the M-ettes put together back to back 25-12 set wins to sweep the Lady Cats.

The Harlem attack netted 14 total kills with Messerly garnering six of them. Little had six Assists while King recorded 12 Digs.

Saturday the Lady Cats were on the road again to take on another District 1 B opponent in Rocky Boy as they faced the Morning Stars.

The two teams played a back and forth opening set that went the way of Rocky Boy 27-25. Harlem bounced back in set number two with a 25-16 win to even the match.

The Stars however won a pair of nail-biters in set number three, 25-23 and set number four, 25-22 to win the match 3-1. Messerly slammed home 13 Kills in the contest.

Head Coach Kim Faulkinberry looked back on the weeks action, “As I look through the stats from the Cut Bank, Malta and Rocky Boy matches, according to what I see on paper we should have won two out of the three matches. Against Cut Bank we had 37 kills to their 20. We had way too many serve errors. Against Malta we played well at times, but the credit goes to Malta in this match. They played very well in every aspect. Rocky Boy was similar to the Cut Bank match. We lead many of the statistical categories but once again faltered at the serving line.”
