We've Got The County Covered
The Harlem Wrestling Boys and Girls Teams are once again under the tutelage of Head Coach Jon Baker. This years girls roster consist of freshman Izzy Baker, sophomore Kaitlyn Johnson, junior Amilia Blackcrow, freshman Ihté Stiffarm and senior Savannah Buckman.
The Wildcat boys team lists seniors Mikkel Rider, Michael King III, Darrius LongKnife, Marty Snow, Stanley Spangelo along with juniors Landen Gray. Rounding out the roster are Sophomores Leon Champagne, Shaide Bell, James Walls, Jakob Dillon, Kendon Young, Dallas Doney, Jesse Castillo. Making their first appearance at the high school level are freshman Trent King, Hawken Haakanson and Joe Arensmeyer
The Lady Cats are led by fourth place state finisher Amilia Blackcrow along with varsity letter winners Johnson and Buckman. The boys letter winners back are King, Rider, Longknife, Snow, Spangelo and Gray.
The wrestling room has been a busy one to start the season, "Practice has been hard. We push everyday to be in the best condition we can be. It seems like we never have enough time to get to all the things we want to, but we make a plan to get basics introduced and refreshed," stated Baker.
The room is certain with where the leadership will come from, "For our team leadership generally falls on the older kids, they help out with the day to day, but mostly they help the younger kids to not get frustrated when things don't work right the first few times," added Baker. "I always have high expectations, These kids work very hard in practice, I believe if they can harness that intensity on the weekends as well, we could bring home some hardware. Hoping to take all my seasoned kids to State this year."
The team is building its program back and that begins with the new kids, "The younger kids on the team mostly have little kid wrestling program experience, and expect them to do well. The learning curve is still present, but the desire to learn is there and we could turn heads," concluded Baker.
The teams have shine in the first two events of the season. The girls finished second in Cascade a week ago bringing home the teams first ever trophy.
At the Scottie Invitational this past weekend freshman Izzy Baker again turned in a solid effort for the Lady Cats finishing third in the 103/113 pound division in the girls tournament. Sophomore Kaitlyn Johnson finished fifth at 132/138 for the Lady Cats.
