'Beeters Can't Slowdown Belt in 46-12 Loss, Face Ennis in First Round Playoff Game

The 7-1 Chinook Sugarbeeters saw their seven game win streak come to an end this past Friday with a 46-12 setback to the 8-0 Belt Huskies. The contest pitted the two top teams in the Northern C battling it out for the North No. 1 seed in the Montana Class C Eight-man Football playoffs set to get underway on Saturday, October 29.

The Sugarbeeters were already guaranteed a spot in the playoffs but were looking to cap off an undefeated season on their home field. Prior to the start of the contest senior, Braxton Inman presented Star Quilts to the seniors and Tuffy Hegelson sang in a special tribute. The Sugarbeeter seniors were recognized as well during a halftime ceremony for their contributions to the program.

Chinook got off to a very inauspicious start on their first possession, forced to punt after just three snaps. Belt took over at their own 27 yard line and quickly marched down the field for a quick 8-0 lead over the Sugarbeeters.

On Chinooks second possession the 'Beeters again seemed a step slow as they approached the line of scrimmage. After being backed up to their own five yard line with back to back false starts the Huskies picked off the 'Beeter pass at the 35 yard line and were quickly back in business.

Belt however couldn't punch it in against a tough 'Beeter defense. Senior, Flint Annis came up with a big stop on fourth down to give Chinook back the ball at their own nine yard line. The offense however could muster just three yards and were quickly forced to punt the ball back to the Huskies.

The 'Beeter defense again stood the test, forcing Belt into a third and three. Senior Tyler Schoen busted into the Husky backfield for a two yard loss and Belt turned the ball over on downs following an incomplete fourth down pass.

The 'Beeter offense continued to struggle mightily, quickly finding themselves in a fourth and nine situation allowing the Husky defense to pin their ears back and come after the 'Beeter punt. Belt broke through the line for the block and scored right away to put Belt up 16-0 with 10:47 left in the first half.

Chinook took over on their next possession with their best field position of the contest at their own 30 yard line. Schoen had nice runs of seven and fourteen yards to start the drive. The 'Beeters benefited by a personal foul for a hit out of bounds moving the ball deep into Husky territory. Jensen would soon punch the ball in a one yard plunge aided by Schoen with an assist from his running back position. The conversion was no good leaving Chinook down 16-6 midway through the second quarter.

The Huskies answered right back with a 10 yard touchdown run on their next possession to extend the lead back to 22-6. Both teams were unable to score on ensuing possessions sending the teams to the halftime locker room.

Belt started the second half with a methodic drive that culminated with a 12 yard scoring pass at the 6:33 mark of the third quarter for a 28-6 Belt advantage. The 'Beeters were in a position to add points moments later but a fourth down attempt deep in Husky territory at the Belt five yard line went unsuccessful turning the ball back over to the Husky's. Belt effectively moved the ball down the field leading to a 27 yard scoring strike in the final minute of the third quarter and a 34-6 lead.

Chinook found a bit of rhythm to start the fourth quarter. Schoen picked up 22 yards on first down and followed with runs of four, seven and six yards to put the offense in scoring position. Senior Quarterback, Levi Jensen lofted a throw down the right sideline where sophomore, Hendrix Doney made a nice play on the ball for a 23 yard gain.

Jensen and the 'Beeters found themselves in a first and goal situation and were looking to make a big play. Jensen took the snap, quickly looked to his right and fired a ball intended for sophomore Jacob Metcalf. The ball bounced in the air and a diving catch was made by senior Lane Hasler for a four yard touchdown. The 'Beeters again came up short on the conversion attempt leaving the score at 34-12 in favor of Belt.

The Huskies added a late score with 2:40 left in the contest and scored the final points of the game on a 47 yard punt return as time expired to secure the 46-12 win over the 'Beeters.

The Sugarbeeters will use the upcoming week to get healthy, work on specialty skills and then begin their preparation for a first round playoff game in Ennis against the Mustangs on Saturday, October 29 with kickoff set for 1:00 p.m. The Mustangs enter the playoffs as the No. 2 Seed out of the Central Division and boast a 7-1 overall record as well.
