HARLEM ELEMENTARY HONORS COMMUNITY VETERANS

On Friday afternoon, November 11th, Harlem Elementary staff and students held an assembly to honor and give thanks to all of our community veterans. Mr. Lowell Long, American Legion Department of Montana Commander, took on the task of Master of Ceremonies, as well as teaching the 6th graders the proper etiquette of handling and folding the American flag.

The program began with the entire elementary reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, plus the Aaniiih and Nakota Pledges. Grades Kindergarten through 6th grade sang, "Oh, I Love America," before Mr. Long introduced each individual veteran, along with their branch of service and years served.

Mid-program, the 6th graders demonstrated the proper way to fold the American flag, explaining the meaning and significance of each fold. Following the demonstration, Mr. Long presented the newly folded flag to local veteran, Mr. Reuben Kuntz.

To wrap up the assembly, the students sang, "God Bless the USA," and presented the veterans with drawings and cards of thanks while filing past the honorees to shake their hands and give hugs to our special guests, many of which are beloved moms/dads, uncles/aunts, and grandmas/grandpas to our students.

Harlem Elementary has a very long history of sharing our gratitude with our veterans, and will continue to praise those who served and gave so much of themselves in order to protect our freedom. Thank you veterans!
