We've Got The County Covered
The Turner Tornadoes completed their season sweep of the Dodson Coyotes at home on Friday night with a 70-49 thumping. Turner defeated the Coyotes earlier in the season by a score of 65-58. Saturday the Tornadoes were in Box Elder and put up one heck of a fight before falling to the first place Bears 71-57.
Friday night the Tornadoes took control from the opening tip and never looked back. Just :12 into the contest junior Trent Billmayer connected on a short jumper while being fouled and added the free throw to get the scoring started.
Billmayer then turned a steal into a layup for a quick 5-0 lead. Sophomore Tate Beck battled for a lose ball got it up court to Billmayer for another layup and the flood gates were starting to open. Sophomore Caleb Zellmer spotted up for a corner three to push the lead to 10-0 with 4:56 remaining in the opening quarter.
Senior Charlie Calvert made a nice move in the paint to get the Tornado inside game going. Junior Ryan Doyle got in the action with a clean steal at half court for another easy layup. Turner led 16-0 before the Coyotes got on the board with a free throw.
Turner continued to string points together to close out the quarter. Billmayer and Doyle each added layups and the defense kept turning the Coyotes over. By quarters end Turner had opened up a 26-1 advantage.
Zellmer and Doyle each scored six in the second quarter leading to a 44-15 halftime lead. The tornadoes added 16 more in the third quarter and coasted to a 70-49 win to complete the season sweep of the Coyotes.
The Tornadoes were led on the night by Doyle with 21 points. Zellmer added 19 and Billmayer finished with 14.
Saturday the Tornadoes got off to a solid start against the high scoring Bears. Senior Charlie Calvert scored 10 first quarter points to power the offense. Box Elder led 22-17 to start the second quarter but the Tornado defense shut them down before the half. Doyle scored eight second quarter points helping the Tornadoes take a 31-27 lead into intermission.
The Bears clawed their way back on top in the third quarter to retake the lead 44-42 heading into the fourth. The Bears got their up tempo style of play going the final eight minutes, outscoring the Tornadoes 27-15 to earn a 71-57 win. Calvert finished the contest with 19 points to lead the Tornadoes. Doyle added 18 Zellmer contributed nine.
The Tornadoes will head to Hays this Friday to take on the Thunderbirds. Saturday they will return home to take on the Chinook Sugarbeeters. The season is quickly winding down with just four regular season games remaining and tournament seeding on the line.
