The Chinook Sugarbeeters continued their run through their 2022-23 regular season this past week with a pair of dominate wins. On Friday the 'Beeters took on a much improved Harlem Lady Cat team and steadily built a lead culminating in 54-32 win. Saturday the 'Beeters were in Turner taking on the Tornadoes and wasted little time in taking control of the contest. The 'Beeters started strong and cruised to a 63-26 win.
Friday night against the Lady Cats Chinook sophomore Alexus Seymour got the scoring started with a three-point bucket off the inbound pass from junior Hallie Neibauer for a quick 3-0 'Beeter lead. Sophomore Raelynne Briere followed with a basket inside moments later for the Lady Cats.
Sophomore Gracie Sanchez soon gave the Lady Cats a 4-3 lead with a steal and layup. The lead was short lived, on the 'Beeters next possession Neibauer made a perfect pass into sophomore Hannah Schoen for a 5-4 'Beeter advantage.
With 3:33 to go in the first quarter Seymour pushed the lead to four with her second triple of the quarter. Junior Mya Berreth then made a steal up top and followed by finding Neibauer cutting hard to the basket for another score and a 10-4 lead. The Lady Cats called timeout to try and slow down the 'Beeter attack.
Neibauer inbounded to Seymour who gave it right back to Neibauer for another 'Beeter long ball. Seymour added her third three moments later to really kick start the offense. The duo combined for 18 of the 20 first quarter 'Beeter points.
The offense took a step back in the second quarter as they were limited to just eight points in the frame. One thing that has never stopped for the 'Beeters is their relentless defense. While the offense may have sputtered a bit, the defense limited the Lady Cats to just three points in the second quarter. As the teams headed into halftime Chinook held a 28-11 advantage.
The Lady Cats didn't back down from the Sugarbeeters at all and challenged the 'Beeters every step of the way. Sophomore Aaraya Mount connected from distance in a 13 point Lady Cat third quarter. Neibauer added another three ball in the frame and junior Jenna Liddle got in the act with five points.
Up 43 -24 to start the fourth quarter the 'Beeters found themselves shooting free throws the remainder of the contest with nine of their eleven points coming from the charity stripe. In the end it was Chinook earning the 54-32 win. Neibauer led the way for the 'Beeters with 19 in the contest and Seymour dropped in 16 points. The Lady Cats were led by sophomore Aaraya Mount with seven points.
Saturday night in Turner, Neibauer connected from downtown and Schoen and Berreth combined for eight points to help the 'Beeter take a 18-4 lead to start the contest. Senior Dakota Krass scored four to provide scoring for the Tornadoes.
The 'Beeter defense continued their high octane pressure defense not giving the Tornadoes a clean look at the basket for the entire length of the shot clock. The defense limited the Tornadoes to just six points in the quarter. The 'Beeter offense kept rolling along with Seymour scoring 10 in the quarter including a pair from beyond the arc.
Chinook led 32-10 to start the third quarter and never looked back. Seymour and Neibauer combined to score all 15 Chinook points in the third quarter including 7-8 from the charity stripe. The 'Beeter defense again refused to give up much allowing Turner to score just four in the frame.
The 'Beeters led 47-14 heading into the fourth quarter and used the opportunity to get some experience for the entire roster. Freshman Neva Lowe found the scoring column. Liddle scored five points and freshman Falyn Cecrle scored her first varsity points.
Chinook was led on the night by Seymour with 26 points. Neibauer finished with 14 for the 'Beeters. Turner was led by sophomore Cassidy Grabofsky and eight grader Natalie Richman with seven points each.
Chinook improved their conference record to 12-0 and their overall record to 16-0. Chinook has locked up the regular season title and will be the No. 1 seed at the District Tournament in two weeks. They will conclude their regular season with a home contest against the North Star Knights on Friday. Saturday the team will head to Fort Benton to face the Longhorns.
The District 9C Tournament will take place at the Havre High School Gymnasium February 15-18. The top three teams will advance to the Northern C Divisional in Great Falls the following week.
