Martin Duane Flying Sr. "Walks Fast" "Aathatha Neethak" was born on August 10, 1964 to Marvin "Sonny Man" Flying and Margaret Stiffarm Flying. Martin is the great great grandson of Vernon Whiteclay the First, Phillip Shortman the First, and Rex Flying. Martin is the oldest of five children and also has four children. Three sons: James, Russell, Martin Jr, and one daughter Cheryl Lynn. He attended all of his school years at the Saint Paul's Mission in Hays. He enjoyed sports and played basketball while he was in school. Martin loved the outdoors and the mountains. He was an all around hand, a gentle loving helpful person who just enjoyed life to the fullest. Martin spent a great deal of time with his grandparents, Paul and Mae Stiffarm who helped him get started in the Pow-Wow lifestyle. He also participated in the Big Lodge by dancing and helping prepare the Lodge for Sundances. Whenever and wherever someone needed help Martin was around to help. He especially enjoyed taking care of his yard and helping his Mother at the Senior Center delivering meals to homebound Seniors. He would also volunteer to give the Center a good cleaning if needed. Martin had many cherished friends to enjoy, appreciate and spend time with. Martin also had a good kind heart that he shared with those he met along the way. His family: Mother Margaret, Sister Marlene (Jerry), Marvin, and Mardy were loved and appreciated by him and his extended family always appreciated his drop in visits. Recently Martin had surgery which took a toll on him and eventually led to his death. He is preceded in death by his Grandparents on the Stiffarm, Shortman, Brisbo, and Flying side. His father Marvin, brother Monte and adopted brother Basil Doney. Survivors include Mother, Margaret, Sister, Marlene & Jerry and brothers, Mardy, Marvin, he leaves behind three sons; James (Lacy), Russell (Journi) and Martin, Jr., and one daughter, Cheryl Lynn, uncle Ronald (Mavis) Stiffarm, aunts Katherine Johnson, Helen (Will) Morey, Cecilia (Ronald) Youngbear, and Gloria (Ron) Perry, Grandchildren; Jazmine, RJ, JR, Kyra, Aubri, Kylar, Reggie and Javen as well as numerous extended family including Stiffarm, Shortman, Flying, Brisbo, White Clay, LaForge, Lincoln, special brother, John Rhodes as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and beloved friends. Wake and Funeral was held at the Saint Paul's Mission with burial in the Shortman Cemetery. Wake was held Tuesday, May 23, 2023, beginning at 5:00 pm with rosary at 7:00 pm. Funeral Mass was Wednesday May 24, 2023 at 11:00 am.
