We've Got The County Covered
In preparation for the upcoming auditions for their production of Newsies, a musical based on the Disney film of the same name, Montana Actor’s Theatre (MAT) will be holding Audition Intensives on August 29 and 30 at the Havre High School Theatre at 4:00 p.m. for youth in grades 6-12. Auditions for the show itself will take place on August 31 with performances scheduled for November.
According to Youth Activities Director for MAT, Angela Pratt, these intensives are for youth in grades 6-12 and are open to all youth, including those from outlying areas, private schools, and homeschool settings. No experience is necessary, and participants will learn what to expect at theatrical auditions and how to showcase their talents.
Although attendance at one of these audition intensives is not required to audition, they are highly encouraged for anyone interested in auditioning for Newsies. One of the primary reasons for this recommendation is that the music and choreography that will be used at the Newsies auditions will be taught at these intensives but not at auditions. Newsies auditions will begin on August 31 at 4:00 p.m. at the Havre High School Theatre.
Pratt also wishes to point out that while youth in grades 6 and 7 are welcome at the audition intensives, these younger students will not be considered for roles in Newsies. Newsies auditions are open ONLY to youth in grades 8-12 or in the approximate age range of 13-19.
Based on the actual Newsboy Strike of 1899, this Disney musical tells the story of Jack Kelly, a gutsy and rebellious newsboy who dreams of a life as an artist away from the big city. After the publishing giant, Joseph Pulitzer raises newspaper prices at the newsboys’ expense, Kelly and his fellow newsies take action.
Given the time period, characters are primarily male, but cross gender casting is likely. There are also several roles for adults which will be cast by invitation only. The performance of Newsies is scheduled for November 16-18 and 23-25 on the Havre High School stage.
Individuals interested in participating are encouraged to visit mtactors.com to complete the Audition and Volunteer Form before auditions on August 31.
