We've Got The County Covered
Good times and holiday cheer are coming to Turner on Saturday, November 25. A Craft Fair is being planned, plus a dinner will be provided with live music featuring some classic Christmas songs and a Poker run to complete the good times.
Event organizer Linda Hutton talked about this year's stroll, "The last one we had was in 2019, in 20, 21, and 22 we had the car show but we decided to bring it back this year. In the past, it's been primarily the businesses that put it on. Denise Watkins, who owns Image N that Saloon, was really the one who spearheaded its comeback. Denise, Crystal Friedrich and I are the main committee while Shannon Van Voast heads up the 4-H side of it. We all got together recently and had an organizational meeting."
It takes a lot of work to get the town set up and the committee counts on the most reliable group of all, "The Big Flat 4-H kids have organized getting all the lights put up around town. They go through all the strands to make sure all the lights are working and get them hung up around town. When the time comes, the group will take them all down and store them appropriately. They are really our version of City workers.
The Big Flat will host a Poker Run in conjunction with the stroll and is always a hit. "We are a pretty small community, we don't have a lot of people, so really it's just for fun," said Hutton. "Something men and women can do and it's a good reason to get together."
The Poker Run requires a $10 buy in and can be purchased at any one of the participating businesses. Those businesses include Reed's Elevator, Harmon Machines, Big Flat Grocery, The Border Bar and Grill, Imagine N That and Apple Dapple. "We don't keep anything, everything goes back to the players," stated Hutton. "Whoever has the high hand and the low hand."
The Poker Run has always done well, "We have done it a few times in the past and have always had a good turnout. The winning hands will be unveiled at the Border Bar and Grill at the end of the day," added Hutton.
The business will all be open, gift certificates will be available and good opportunities to shop will be had. "Reeds Elevator will be open, and they are kind of Turners Walmart. Big Flat Grocery will have a photo booth with a holiday themed project," commented Hutton. "Big Flat 4-H members involved in a photography project will be setting up and designing the background and taking the pictures. There is no charge for the picture, we will just email it to them, and they can do anything they want with it."
A Craft Fair will take place in the Turner Old Gym from 2:00-6:00 pm. The event is being organized by Denise Watkins and she is the point of contact for anyone interested in having a booth. Interested folks can contact Denise at 406-390-0539, call or text.
Shannon Van Voast talks about the contribution from the 4-H kids, "The Big Flat 4-H club does all their light checks and makes sure everything is good to go. Then Chet Fouts will take the kids around town in his bucket truck and set them up." Van Voast added, "Typically we will get them set up on Thanksgiving weekend, depending on the weather, and then they will take them down in early January. The kids use their November meeting to get all the lights ready to go."
Big Flat 4-H will host a dinner from 4-6 on Saturday that will be held at the Old Gym and they will also be helping with the Craft Fair. The Wet Weather Band will be playing Christmas music as well during the dinner.
The money that is raised will go to helping fund a spay and neuter clinic for the community focusing on cats. Be sure to head north to Turner on Saturday, November 25 for some good family fun.
