The Turner Tornado Boys basketball team was in Glasgow this past Friday and Saturday taking part in the Class C Showcase. The Tornadoes got their season started off on the right foot with a 61-50 win over Nashua. Saturday the Tornadoes fell to Bainville 53-46 to start the season 1-1.
Against Nashua Friday morning Turner got a long ball from junior Caleb Zellmer and seven points from senior Trent Billmayer early on keeping Turner close, trailing 15-14 at the end of the first Quarter. Turner connected three times from beyond the arc in the second quarter getting triples from junior Carson Maloney, senior Ryan Bell and Billmayer to help Turner take a slim 32-31 lead into the halftime locker room. Maloney scored six in the stanza and Doyle 5.
Turner played very well coming out of the break getting a pair of triples from freshman Tate Beck and six points from Doyle to lead 46-40 at the end of the third quarter. Coming down the stretch Billmayer added six more to his tally and Doyle connected again from beyond the arc to help increase Turner’s lead to 61-50. Billmayer led the Tornado attack with 17 points in the win. Doyle finished the contest with 14 points including two three-point bombs and Maloney added nine more himself.
Against Bainville the Tornadoes trailed 12-8 entering the second quarter getting three points each from Doyle and Maloney. Turner closed the gap in the second stanza, Billmayer dropped in a three-ball and scored seven, sending the teams to halftime with Turner trailing 22-20. The third quarter was tough on the Tornadoes with the team scoring just five points while surrendering 15.
Trailing 37-25 entering the fourth quarter the Tornadoes gave it their best shot. Doyle dropped in a pair of three-point bombs and 10 points then Billmayer added seven more in helping Turner outscore Bainville 21-16 down the stretch. The strong fourth quarter effort left the Tornadoes short of a comeback as they fell 53-46. Doyle finished with 17 to lead the way, Billmayer tallied 14 and Maloney 12.
Turner will now head to Harlowton for another preseason tournament before opening the District 9C play at home against Chester/Joplin-Inverness on December 15.
