Lady Cats Fall Short in Poplar & Fall 77-60

The Harlem Lady Cats were back in action this past Saturday as they took on the Poplar Indians. The Lady Cats made the trip east to Poplar for an early season conference clash before the holiday break. The Lady Cats were efficient offensively, but the defense struggled to slow down the Indians in a 77-60 setback.

The Lady Cats had their running shoes on early as a fast-paced first quarter ended with Harlem down three 22-19 heading into the second quarter. Senior Emma Billmayer dropped in a pair from beyond the arc and Harlem had seven players get in the scoring column in the opening quarter. Poplar really opened things up in the second quarter of action, taking control of the contest with a 30-8 second quarter to lead 52-27 over the Lady Cats.

Head Coach Derek Azure rallied the team at halftime, leading to a strong third quarter that saw Harlem outscore Poplar 24-15, cutting the deficit to 67-51 heading into the fourth quarter. Billmayer dropped in three from distance to lead the rally. The teams traded baskets down the stretch, leading to a 77-60 win by the Indians over the Lady Cats.

Billmayer knocked down five triples in the contest and scored 18 for the Lady Cats; freshman Jasalyn Lambert added ten to the Harlem total. The Lady Cats game scheduled for Tuesday against the Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds has been rescheduled for January 2, 2024.
