“The Frozen River” is by Ariel Lawhon. This gripping historical mystery is inspired by the life and diary of Martha Ballard, a renowned eighteenth-century midwife who refused to accept anything less than justice at a time when women were considered best seen and not heard.
Colleen Coble is the author of “Fragile Designs.” Carly Harris struggles to support herself and her infant son since the mysterious murder of her police-officer husband, Eric. When her grandmother suggests Carly and her sisters restore the family home in Beaufort and turn it into a bed-and-breakfast she immediately begins work to clean out the house. She uncovers a family secret Eric kept hidden and an heirloom that the wrong person wouldn’t hesitate to kill for.
A new nonfiction selection is “The Amish Wife” by Gregg Olsen. In 1977, in an Ohio Amish community, pregnant wife and mother Ida Stutzman died in a barn fire. The coroner identified it a death from natural causes. When Ida’s husband Eli eventually left the faith and took his son with him, murder followed. In this work, the author finally uncovers the disturbing truth and the conspiracy of silence that kept it hidden for forty-five years.
Other new titles include “The Night Island,” the second installment in the “Lost Night Files” trilogy by Jayne Ann Krentz. “The Price You Pay,” a Peter Ash novel, is by Nick Petrie. “Some of Us Are Looking” is a County Kerry novel by Carlene O’Connor.
