We've Got The County Covered

Chinook Library

The Blaine County Library Board of Trustees will hold their regular meeting Monday June 24 th at 4:30 p.m. in the library meeting room.

The library recently received a complimentary copy of the book “Documenting Communism: The Hoover Project to Microfilm and Publish the Soviet Archives” by Charles Palm. In late 1991, the Soviet Union was dissolved, and after 70 years of repression and global menace, the Communist dictatorship came to an end. Within months, the new Russian government and the Hoover Institution concluded an agreement to copy and publish what was then one of the world’s largest untapped archival treasures- the archives of the Soviet Union. Over the next 12 years, some 10 million documents were microfilmed, published, and made available to libraries around the world. Charles Palm tells the story of the project he initiated and led as deputy director of the Hoover Institution, together with his Russian partners and their British publisher.

The name Charles Palm may sound familiar to many in the community. Chuck, as most locals know him, graduated from Chinook High School in 1962. This book is cataloged and ready for checkout.

Adventure Begins at Your Library! is the theme for the Summer Reading Program. We’ve had over 100 kids register to participate. Last week the kids built protective containers for eggs. Today Northwestern Energy will be at the library to do a presentation and then test to see which containers best protect an egg.

For every 1 hour read, kids will be able to enter their name into our Summer Reading prize drawings. On top of that, they will receive a stamp in their “Adventures Passport” book (kept here) for each completed reading slip they bring in and for each program they attend. At the end of our Summer Reading Program, completed passport pages will be entered to win a mystery prize! We encourage Pre-Readers to participate by having someone read to them. Older children can read to their younger siblings, and both can count the time read. Accelerated Reading tests are available at the library during the summer to help kids get a head start on AR points for the fall. Audiobooks do not count in our challenge. Children who join the summer reading program keep their minds active and enter school in the fall ready to learn and ready to succeed!

There will be a Summer Reading Program every Wednesday from 3:00-4:00 p.m. beginning May 29th and ending July 31st. Each program will last around 45- 60 minutes. There will be stories, games, crafts, presentations and treats each week. We ask any child 5 years old and younger be accompanied by an adult or caretaker over the age of 13 years old. We will also continue our Story Time on Tuesdays from 10:30-11:00 for those children 5 years old and under to attend. Summer Story Time is tailored to the needs and interests of a younger age group, and it is a great opportunity for younger children to get involved with our summer library activities. Each week we will read stories, sing songs, and have activities or crafts. Beat the Heat Movies will be on Tuesdays from 3:00 to 4:30. Hangout for ages twelve and up will be Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 and LEGO Club will be on Thursdays from 3:00 to 4:00.

Adults and young adults can participate in the Summer Reading Program and be eligible for a prize. For every book read adults and young adults (grade 9 and up) can enter their name into the drawing.
