We've Got The County Covered
Blaine County Citizens will have a chance to learn some good information about Blaine County and the area. Samantha French, Blaine County Museum Director recently announced five speakers for the coming months.
On Sept. 25, area legislator Greg Jergeson will do a presentation on longtime Legislator Francis Bardanouve. He served Blaine County and the area for 36 years and made a large impact on the area. Bardanouve's daughter, Libby Kuntz will also be in attendance. The Presentation will be at the Lutheran Church in Harlem starting at 7 pm. Those interested can come early to view memorabilia from Bardanouve's life.
Austin Haney, former ranger for the Bears Paw Battlefield will give a talk on Friday, Oct. 4 at the Blaine County Library conference room. This presentation will focus on the days leading up the Battle of the Bears Paw. The battle took place from Sept. 30 to Oct. 5, so the presentation will be near the anniversary of the Battle.
All of the other presentations except for Jergeson's and Haney's will be at the Chinook Senior Center and begin at 5:30. "Ginger is such a great hostess, and usually provides refreshments," said French.
Elaine Morse of Havre will be the next speaker on Wednesday, Oct. 23. She is a volunteer with the H. Earl Clack Museum and will be doing a history of Hill County and the Homestead Act in the area. Much of her information will come from the book, "In the (Even More) Years Gone By." This book is an update by Morse of the original book published in 1964, "In the Years Gone By," compiled by the Cottonwood Home Demonstration Club about the Cottonwood Simpson homestead area.
French said she reached out to Morse after feed back from last year's speaker series. "A lot of people requested history on homesteading."
Micah Chang who grew up in Malta will be the next in the series with a history of the Hi-Line focusing on agriculture and the sugar beet industry during WWI and WWII. Some of the history will focus on the migrants in the area and Japanese American laborers after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Chang is an assistant professor of history from MSU in Bozeman. This presentation will take place on November 13.
The final speaker will be French herself, who will talk about Gilbert Horn Sr. and his life and times and the exhibit currently at the Museum. This will take place November 27. Horn Jr. was an American military veteran who served as an Assiniboine code talker during World War II. Horn, a member of the Merrill's Marauders during the war, utilized the Assiniboine language to encode communications by the U.S. military in the Pacific theater.
