We've Got The County Covered
The Harlem Wildcats and Lady Cats were in Wolf Point on Thursday and participated in the Glasgow Invitation along with the Chinook Sugarbeeters on Friday and Saturday. Results were unavailable at press time for the Wolf Point meet. After three full days of competition, Head Coach, Jon Baker was very pleased with his team's performance on the mat. "Harlem came prepared for a long weekend of grappling. A hard week of tweaking technique in practice was what was needed to improve our performances."
Friday and Saturday in Glasgow, the Harlem Wildcats had 10 athletes compete and the Lady Cats had 8.
On the girls' side, Emma Klingaman found success in the tournament, winning the 130-pound weight class. Klingaman went 4-0 on the weekend, winning the championship match by fall over Custer Co.'s Aly Dinardi in a quick 47 seconds. Izzy Baker also performed well in Glasgow, earning a 5th place finish in the 105-pound weight class. Baker won by fall over Custer Co.'s Aspen Peila in 1:05 in her final match of the weekend. Nihoni Stiffarm split on the weekend, going 2-2 to earn a 7th place finish in the 120-pound weight class. Stiffarm's final match of the day was won by fall over Baker's Kayla Afrank in 2:35.
Also representing the Lady Cats on the weekend were Meadow Moats, Jalana Gone, Amira Hoops, Kehtsin Stiffarm, and Svea Hogan.
Coach Baker was very happy overall with the girls' performance over the weekend. "On the girls' side this weekend, where does one start? Eighth grader Nahoni Stiffarm had a 12-second quick pin on the number one seeded girl in the 120 girls' bracket. Senior girls Svea Hogan and Izzy Baker both knocked the rust off, pulling down some precious mat time. Hogan, coming back from an injury sustained her sophomore year and placing in the top eight, showed us she's ready to get back into her groove. Baker went 5-2 for the weekend, finishing in fifth, and showed improvement as well.
Junior Emma Klingaman was the standout for the girls' team with another first-place finish. Emma racked up a 4-0 record this weekend in a total time of 5 minutes and 52 seconds. "She's working hard and staying focused." "The girls team overall is still very young, but strong and eager to learn. As the season progresses, I am confident their growth will be nothing but spectacular. You got this, girls!"
On the boys' side, Trent King placed 5th in the 175-pound weight class. King went 4-2 over the weekend, winning his final match by fall over Colstrip's Kaydence Little Wolf in a quick 56 seconds.
Issac Cuts the Rope also went 4-2 on the weekend, earning a 7th place finish in the 126-pound weight class. Cuts the Rope won by decision over Lewistown's Cold McCord 7-0.
Also competing in Glasgow for the boys were Orion Cuts the Rope, Kyle Hudon, Ilizjah Main, Landon Longknife, Seth Ironchild, Titan King, Dustin Adams, and Jasper Lamere.
"The Boys team racked up many wins in Wolf Point on Thursday night, priming themselves up for the battle to come at the Scottie Invite. Senior Trent King and Sophomore Isaac Cuts the Rope, both showed their growth and hunger, tallying up some wins. Their placing stance wasn't where they wanted to finish, but it fueled the fire. Eighth Grader Titan King and Freshman Jasper Lamere also gained some mat time experience. They went head-to-head with some very experienced opponents. Not backing down was a common theme among the entire boys' team."
"The boys all wrestled well. We have to be mentally tough. Our physical conditioning is ongoing throughout the season, but mental toughness has to be found right away in this sport. The personal growth I witnessed this weekend makes me excited about seeing what will happen this season. Keep pushing boys!"
Coach Baker is looking forward to this week in practice where they will continue to work on fixing the little things and drilling the "basic basics". Strengthening their bodies and their Warrior Wildcat mindset.
Both the Lady Cat and Wildcat teams will be traveling to the Huntley Project tournament in Worden this weekend, where they plan to broaden their range and build confidence on the mat.
