Sugarbeeters gained some wins and bore some losses over the weekend. On Thursday, the Lady Beeters basketball team secured a 47-35 victory over Fort Benton while the boys' squad fell 56-38 to a tough Longhorn team.
The Chinook girls pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring Fort Benton 14-6 and riding that momentum to the win. A strong defensive effort in the second half was key and senior guard Alexus Seymour led Chinook in scoring, finishing with 11 points.
"We knew we had to lock in defensively and focus on limiting their key players," said Chinook coach Seymour. "The girls executed the game plan well, and it made all the difference." Their execution continued into Saturday with a 41-27 win over Shelby.
Our Beeter boys put forth effort but couldn't contain Fort Benton's inside presence on Thursday. The Longhorns broke open the game with a decisive 16-9 run in the third quarter. Despite a valiant offensive effort and Jameson Nordboe's 10 points, Chinook found themselves unable to keep pace. Coach Bell's commitment in stating "We'll take what we learned and get back to work" seems to have paid off because on Saturday the Beeter boys bested Shelby by 11 with a final of 47-39.
On Friday, Hay's-Lodgepole girls defeated North Star 37-29 while CJI boys bested the Tornadoes 61-43. CJI girls were also victors taking the win at 56-49. The Lady Wildcats took a loss to Malta, 79-43 and the boys suffered a defeat from Malta, too, with a final of 80-56. Turner girls came close to victory on Saturday against Big Sandy at 41-38 and the boys enjoyed a solid victory over Big Sandy, final score 66-42.
Battles were fought on the mats this past weekend! The girls traveled to the Lewistown Golden Eagles Invite which featured teams from all across Montana. 105 pound senior Grace Buck pinned all of her opponents and took a 1st place win. Well done Grace! Bailey Billmayer fought hard for a 2nd place at the podium after an upset victory during the semi finals against Montana's number 3 ranked wrestler. Lynley Conrad was able to secure a 3rd place. Overall, the girls came out at number 11 of the 30 A and AA competitors, making the coaches very proud.
Coach Stroh and his cadre were also very proud of the Beeter boys' performance in the ring in Chinook. "I wanted the boys to show off what they have been working so hard for the past months - and they delivered!" said Stroh. Coach Stroh and his wrestlers would like to thank the community for showing up and supporting them at home. "They work hard every day and we really enjoy the boys showing everyone how far they've come."
